This is an exciting opportunity for a new Associate Vice President for Enrollment Management to bring clarified purpose and vision to the recruitment and retention of students, who will be able to take advantage of the University's many nationally accredited academic programs, including business, engineering, nursing, visual and performing arts, and teacher certification.

Northern Illinois University (NIU) is located in one of the most dynamic regions of the country, 65 miles west of Chicago; NIU is a comprehensive teaching and research institution with a diverse and international student body of more than 23,500. Chartered in 1895, NIU opened in 1899 as the Northern Illinois State Normal School solely to prepare college-educated teachers. The Division of Student Affairs & Enrollment Management employs more than 450 staff members and is comprised of 22 departments. The Division's mission, in alliance with the educational mission of NIU, is to create student learning opportunities beyond the classroom that inspire intellectual, personal, and civic growth for leadership in a diverse and complex world.

 

About the Position

 

The Associate Vice President for Enrollment Management (AVPEM) reports to the Vice President for Student Affairs & Enrollment Management and is a member of the Vice President's Senior Staff. The AVPEM oversees a staff of 77 full-time employees and a budget of approximately $9.4 million, including personnel. Direct reports include the Directors of Admissions, Student Financial Aid, Scholarship Office, and Orientation.

 

The AVPEM provides leadership for the development, implementation, and evaluation of recruitment strategies, publications, training, orientation, and advising as related to the outreach and recruitment process.  The position requires proven expertise in the full range of enrollment management responsibilities, including institutional positioning, student recruitment and retention, admissions, financial aid, orientation and scholarships. The AVPEM also coordinates the University's approach to recruitment and retention as specified in the Enrollment Management Strategic Plan: http://bit.ly/1lximWf.

 

Essential areas of responsibility include but are not limited to: 

  • Provide vision and leadership in administering and implementing an effective enrollment management program as prescribed by the mission and goals of the University. Develop more effective student enrollment strategies.
  • Provide leadership in the development of budgets - assessment, planning and evaluation- and strategic planning.
  • Implement state-of-the-art information technology systems and practices for improved communication with prospective and enrolled students, faster transaction processing, and analytical information for administration and governance units.
  • Advance the development, implementation, and maintenance of policies and procedures, in all offices and on all levels, which enhance the operation of Enrollment Management and support attainment of the University's enrollment objectives.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with academic deans and faculty to coordinate and ensure appropriate participation by academic units in student recruitment and retention.
  • Establish and develop short-term and long-term plans for open communication and sharing of knowledge with University offices internally and externally, thus providing a channel for collaboration among key administrators, establishing and achieving University-wide enrollment targets, and enhancing the student experience from application through graduation. 

The Successful Candidate

 

The ideal candidate will have five or more years of higher education leadership experience in a successful enrollment management position that is informed by best practices in recruitment and retention, and that has shaped enrollment by academic program, student diversity, and academic ability. Depth of experience in strategic planning, marketing, and developing and coordinating implementation of a comprehensive student success are all musts.

 

Candidates must be prepared to serve as an agent for change in a complex organization; possess exceptional consensus development and team-building, listening, and facilitation skills; have an ability to communicate effectively and persuasively both orally and in writing; and possess strong analytical skills to analyze and use data and information for effective planning and decision-making. Finally, the incumbent will have exceptional skills in the area of marketing and will be particularly proficient in the use of current and emerging technological advances and social networking tools. A master's degree is required and a doctorate preferred.
