An Academic Coordinator is being solicited to help with the development of a new online course at UCLA.  The course is currently being offered as a face-to-face course at UCLA and is an upper division elective for undergraduates in the Physiological Science major. The course garnered a 2013 Chancellors Distinguished Teaching Award and we will now offer the course as an online version that will be available to all UC campuses and beyond.  The Academic Coordinator will work closely with the Course Coordinator (Dr. Crosbie-Watson), guest faculty lectures from the David Geffen School of Medicine and the Division of Life Science, Office of Instructional Development (for production, post-production, and assessments), TAs, guest panelists (families affected by Duchenne muscular dystrophy), and student affairs officers (SAOs) across all UC campuses.  The Academic Coordinator will 1) review and refine of existing lectures that have been previously recorded on Bruincast; 2) identify learning modules within each lecture; 3) identify critical publications to exemplify key concepts in disease therapeutics and mechanisms in consultation with Course Coordinator; 4) attend scientific lectures/workshops on Duchenne muscular dystrophy to become proficient with course content; 5) connect lessons from learning modules with basic biological information from the Life Science core series; 6) develop a large database of questions and problem sets with solution sets; 7) identify areas in content that should be clarified with better images, animation, etc.; 8) design questions for midterms/finals with solution set using questions from the face-to-face course as a guide; 9) improve upon and create illustrations to better student learning; 10) coordinate guest panel with families affected by muscular dystrophy, in consultation with the Course Coordinator; 11) coordinate with guest faculty lecturers and Office of Instructional Development (OID); 12) work with OID and the Course Coordinator on post-production editing of learning modules; 13) develop assessment tools to analyze critical thinking skills in consultation with the Office of Instructional Development and the Course Coordinator; 14) address logistics issues including copyright issues, marketing of course within UC system and beyond, etc. in collaboration with campus SAOs; 15) coordinate with Life Sciences Computing to design interface and course layout in collaboration with Course Coordinator; 16) coordinate with other UC campuses/SAOs to bring awareness of the course to all UC campuses.
