Reporting to the Executive Director of Advancement Services, the Director of Donor Engagement is a senior level position charged with creating engagement and outreach programs for Harvard Law School Development and Alumni Relations. The position works to foster lasting relationships between the Law School and its alumni and benefactors, promoting positive attitudes toward giving among current and prospective donors, reaches out to all HLS constituents, and is responsible for designing, implementing and coordinating comprehensive communications, donor relations, and events programs.
Responsible for developing and implementing a strategic and integrated alumni and donor engagement program that encompasses outreach, recognition, and alumni communications programs. Oversees alumni and development outreach efforts to drive key initiatives and activities including the upcoming Harvard campaign. Oversees planning and implementation for major donor recognition and engagement events, including events for specific donor groups, leadership councils and volunteer committees, gift recognition events, building and space dedications, campaign meetings and events as well as other special events. Ensures that all events are executed successfully, meeting high standards of quality and service. Serves as a strategic leader for developing new programs and publications to engage and recognize donors. Oversees content development for digital and print alumni/donor materials to include; annual report of gifts, case statements, as well as related feature stories. Oversees design and content for Development and Alumni Relations website. Manages the endowed gift fund reporting program, including creating fund activity and financial reports for gifts which include professorships, financial aid funds, fellowships, prize funds, book funds, and research programs as well as overseeing report production and mailing to donors. Works with fundraising staff to provide appropriate donor recognition through events, publications and related publicity vehicles. Collaborates with HLS Communications team to leverage the Schools various communications channels and materials and to ensure consistent positioning and messaging. Cultivate favorable working relationships with Office of the Dean, HLS Media Services, and all student services departments. Works collaboratively with the University Development Communications team, and the Harvard Alumni Affairs office. Manages department annual budget and acts with discretion. Manages a team of five.
Bachelor degree required and a minimum ten years experience, preferably in higher education development and alumni relations engagement; communications, events management, development strategy, advancement services or stewardship.
Must be an experienced manager with excellent organizational and leadership skills and have demonstrated experience in overseeing comprehensive alumni engagement, donor recognition, and alumni communication programs and employ creative and strategic thinking. Experience managing a team with diverse functions and roles is required. Must have the ability to oversee complex projects, build consensus among teams and balance concurrent priorities. Familiarity with endowment management, monitoring and reporting is needed. Excellent organizational, interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills are essential. Writing and editing skills are essential. Event planning experience is required Must be detail-oriented, and able to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced and goal-oriented environment. Familiarity with digital communications and social media programs desirable. Must be able to evaluate challenges, show resourcefulness in identifying solutions, and display good sound judgment. Must be willing to make difficult decisions to initiate change and ensure optimal outcomes. The position requires high levels of professionalism, collegiality, and exhibit discretion working with confidential information. Experience with alumni and fundraising database applications is essential. Must be available to work evenings and weekends as required.
