Position Description

The mission of the Dean of Students Office is to serve as a resource for helping students resolve university-related issues and concerns. The Dean of Students Office (DOS) is committed to supporting the academic success of students by fostering the development of integrity and problem solving skills, teaching self-advocacy and personal responsibility, and helping students understand the fundamental principles of good citizenship and responsible leadership.

Under general direction of the Dean of Students, the Assistant Dean of Students for Student Support, Student Success, and Retention position serves to ensure students' success by facilitating, through nonclinical interventions, referrals, support, advocacy, and follow-up services in collaboration with other University departments or individuals, community agencies, parents/guardians, and stakeholders in the students' success. This position will provide direct support to three of six academic colleges. The six academic colleges at Cal Poly include the College of Science and Math (CoSaM), College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences (CAFES), College of Engineering (CENG), College of Architecture and Environmental Design (CAED), College of Liberal Arts (CLA) and Orfalea College of Business (OCoB).

The Assistant Dean of Students serves as a key member of the Dean of Students management team and as a principle advisor to the Dean of Students on strategies to accomplish DOS goals and objectives. Additionally, the Assistant Dean of Students performs professional work involving independent judgment, good communication skills, and sound fiscal management skills, and performs administrative responsibilities

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree required and a minimum of five years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field.

Required Qualifications / Specialized Skills
  • Demonstrated experience in successfully managing individual students in crises.
  • Demonstrated ability to determine the appropriate course of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals and groups in personal interactions of a sensitive nature.
  • Knowledge of student development and related federal and state legislation and regulations regarding student privacy.
  • Excellent customer service experience, including ability to represent DOS in a professional and conscientious manner. Demonstrated ability to maintain high quality/standards of work, leadership, ethics, commitment, and professional responsibility and judgment.
  • Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
  • Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to promote a positive working environment, spirit of cooperation and positive relations. Ability to build consensus between and among individuals and groups with diverse interests.
  • Excellent communication skills; ability to effectively communicate and present ideas and concepts in written and presentation format and use consultative and facilitation skills to gain consensus in a collegial manner. Ability to write clear and concise reports and correspondence. Thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation
  • Ability to interpret, communicate and apply policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
  • Experience gathering data and communicating trends to a variety of constituents. Experience identifying areas of improvement based on evidence.
  • Excellent computer skills and proficiency with a variety of computer applications including word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, on-line systems, Internet as well as online calendaring and email.
  • Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure, policies and procedures.

    Preferred Qualifications / Skills
  • Graduate degree in a related field.
  • Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.
  • Knowledge of University policies, procedures, and functions of various department and services on campus.
  • Familiarity in the use of communication through new media, websites, and social networking sites (Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, Polylink).

    Special Conditions

    Up to two positions available.

  • Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
  • Must be able to work occasional holidays and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check.
  • This position classification has been defined as "Exempt" and is not subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

    Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date. Employment of retired CalPERS members will typically be for 90 days or less and must be for work requiring specialized skills or for a bona fide emergency to prevent stoppage of business.

    The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
