Executive Vice President for Student Success and University Counsel

About the Position:

The Executive Vice President for Student Success and University Counsel serves as the Chief Enrollment Management Officer, Chief Student Affairs Officer, and University Counsel for the institution. This newly created position will play a key role in all areas of enrollment management to enhance student retention and success and increase graduation rates. Directs the offices of admissions, student financial assistance, campus life, and other principal student services areas, including the Dean of Students. Under direction of the President, this individual plans, organizes, coordinates, develops, directs, administers and evaluates supportive programs, services, and resources for students at the University. As Chief Legal Officer, this position oversees and manages the provision of all legal services to the University to ensure maximum protection of its legal rights and to maintain its operations within the limits prescribed by law. This position reports directly to the President of the University and serves as a member of the Presidents Council.


Major Responsibilities Include:

  • Developing and implementing recruitment, enrollment, retention, and graduation rate goals, plans, programs, and initiatives and reporting on the results.
  • Building strategic partnerships with the faculty, members of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, and others, both on and off campus, to facilitate institutional understanding that enrollment is a campus-wide responsibility.
  • Providing legal counsel and guidance to university executives and other upper management on all legal matters relevant to the University, including personnel law, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations, and laws pertaining to students, real estate transactions, contracts and grants, tax matters, workers compensation, liability and insurance matters, public monies and purchases, affirmative action, and other laws and regulations.


Required Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctorate (J.D.) degree from an ABA accredited law school is required, and PhD or other advanced degree is highly preferred and a license to practice law in the state of Kentucky, or eligibility to become licensed immediately upon hire is required.
  • Nine years or more of progressively responsible executive-level experience, broad range legal experience, and proven administrative abilities in an institution of higher education is required, with directly related enrollment management, University Counsel, and/or student services experience in an organization of comparable complexity to EKU highly preferred.
  • Work experience should include a proven record of increasing student recruitment, retention, and graduation rate at an institution of comparable complexity, demonstrated experience in predictive modeling, demographics, and financial assistance leveraging strategies, and demonstrated experience in financial reporting, accounting, budgeting, and financial controls.

Compensation will be commensurate with experience and education qualifications and is competitive within the higher education marketplace.
