The Director of Residential Services provides strategic vision and administrative oversight for residence hall operations and services to ensure a safe/secure physical environment and the delivery of outstanding customer service to the 2,900 students, staff, and faculty living in residence. The Director provides leadership in the development and implementation of all short- and long-term physical plant renewal, renovation, and construction projects, oversees Housing Technology and Summer Conference programs, and collaborates with Facilities Services in the delivery of housekeeping, maintenance, and mechanical operations for 12 residence halls and International House. The Director ensures the delivery of essential operations including front desk services, building security, common area use management, physical plant oversight, and contracted services such as laundry and refrigerator rental. The position works closely with College Housing, UChicago Dining, the Department of Safety and Security, the Office of Environmental Safety, and Risk Management and Labor Relations to accomplish College Housing and International House objectives. The position oversees 125 staff and manages an annual operating budget of $19 million.
Reporting to the Executive Director for College Housing & Residential Services and serving as a member of the College Housing & Residential Services senior management team, the Director participates in setting and executing residence hall strategic planning, developing departmental goals and priorities, shaping policies, and recommending resource allocation. The Director also works closely with residential staff in assessing the quality of the physical environment, delivery of front desk operations and services, and management of residence hall policies and procedures. The University anticipates continued growth of the residential program, and the Director will support long-range and strategic capital planning for the residence halls.
A masters degree in a relevant field, three years experience supervising staff in a service delivery environment, and significant customer service and vendor relations experience are required. Successful candidates will also demonstrate strategic leadership skills in a university setting; understanding of the developmental objectives of the college student residential environment; supervisory skills including the ability to lead, train, and evaluate the work of others; knowledge of customer service, reception/front desk services, and functions in a residential or hospitality setting; strong oral and written communication skills; budget management skills; the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, set priorities, and meet deadlines; knowledge of the higher education profession and climate; knowledge of short- and long-term capital project planning and priority-setting; and basic knowledge of building mechanical systems. Experience supervising full-time union/collective bargaining staff in a service delivery environment, and knowledge of industry standards for residential building services, repairs, and maintenance are required. Experience with university-based summer conference programs is a preferred characteristic.
