The universitys controller is responsible for the oversight of daily accounting functions, which include accounts payable, general ledger, student accounts, cash management, auditing, budgeting, finance, and taxation. The controller compiles periodic financial reports and assesses the effectiveness of computer support systems to ensure that proper accounting standards, principles, controls, and procedures are followed in the generation of financial and accounting information. The controller assists the associate vice president for finance in analysis activities for investments and strategic financial planning, and exercises general responsibility for the year-end audit process.
Bachelors degree required with major coursework in accounting, plus a masters degree in accounting or business administration, or a CPA license. Certified Public Accountant (CPA) strongly preferred.
10 years of relevant and progressive experience in managing accounting processes, operating accounting/financial software, developing internal control standards, managing audit processes, preparing tax and information returns, ensuring the protection of institutional assets, developing and tracking budgets, analyzing accounting/financial information, and, managing banking and other relevant accounting/financial relationships with external service providers.
3 years of senior level accounting/financial experience in higher education required.
Accounting department management experience required. Demonstrated experience of at least 7 years in a supervisory accounting role.
Demonstrated proficiency in the operation of accounting software, ERMs, and/or databases (i.e., MS Dynamics, Power Campus, Banner or similar), and office applications (Excel, Word, etc.)

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Manages accounts payable, general ledger, student accounts, cash management, auditing, investments, budgeting, finance, and taxation functions according to generally accepted accounting principles.
Institutes internal controls according to established accounting principles and guidelines.
Ensures timely and accurate preparation of university tax and information returns, forms, and schedules.
Ensures timely and accurate remittance of all university financial obligations, liabilities, and payments.
Prepares periodic reports on investments, cash balances, and cash flow and makes recommendations to associate vice president for finance for efficient and effective utilization of the universitys financial resources.
Manages all university audit(s) processes, including adjusting journal entries, and work papers. Promptly responds to auditor requests, and communicates audit results to the university board of trustees, executive management, and as further prescribed by university guidelines.
Develops and maintains accounting and financial systems that integrate the budgeting and strategic planning processes of the institution.
Assists the associate vice president for finance by collecting, organizing, and analyzing financial data for preparation of various reports and statistical data outlining the universitys financial position in areas of income and expenditure based on past, present, and forecasted operations.
Develops a competent, productive and efficient departmental staff through effective supervision, training, motivation, and professional development.
Encourages a culture of transparency and collaboration in the accounting and finance division.
Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses.
Contributes to the overall success of the university by performing other duties as assigned.
Received: The controller reports directly to the associate vice president for finance.
Given: The controller supervises 4 direct reports in accounting, student accounts, and accounts payable.
