Reporting to the Executive Director for College Housing & Residential Services, the Director of College Housing is the senior residential life position and plays a pivotal role in supporting the personal growth of students in the College Houses, providing general leadership for co-curricular initiatives related to students' sense of community, leadership development, and involvement and engagement in the campus community. In addition, the Director of College Housing oversees the administration of student room and board policies and contracts, room assignments, and associated billing. Responsibilities of the Director include developing goals and objectives of College Housing under the leadership of the Executive Director and in collaboration with the Resident Masters, and developing policies aimed at assuring the health and safety of students, as well as enriching their social, cultural, and intellectual growth. The Director also works closely with residential staff in assessing the quality of the College Housing program. The University anticipates continued growth of the residential program, and the Director will support long-range and strategic planning for residence life.
This position provides supervision for the office staff which includes Associate Directors (2), Assistant Directors (5), Assignments Manager, and Office Secretary. It also oversees the recruitment, training, and supervision of 74 resident heads and 60 resident assistants in the administration of 11 residence halls housing approximately 3,000 undergraduate students. The Director works closely with Residential Services, UChicago Dining, Student Counseling & Health Services, Admissions, the Department of Safety and Security, and other key partners to accomplish College Housing objectives. The position oversees 83 staff and manages an annual operating budget of $3 million.
Requirements include a masters degree in a relevant field; extensive experience with residential staff supervision, program development and administration; a record of accomplishment as a student advocate and champion for student success; demonstrated leadership and collaboration skills, excellent problem-solving, crisis management, team building, and communication skills; and an ability to build positive and effective relationships with colleagues and student leaders. Experience with strategic planning and development of best practices related to organizational program and service development, as well as assessment activities; documented success in a large, complex university setting; and an understanding of residence life will also be important considerations in the selection of the Director of College Housing.
