The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences seeks applicants for the Director of the Center for Sustainable Rural Livelihoods (CSRL). This position will direct the day-to-day administrative, program and research activities of a multidisciplinary center whose mission is to develop and implement programs to build capacity of the citizens of Kamuli District in Uganda, as well as the faculty, staff and students at Makerere University (Uganda) and Iowa State University.
This position is responsible for providing vision and leadership
in building and strengthening relationships between CSRL and its
in-country partner organizations and between CSRL and international
organizations in ways that can directly benefit CSRL program
activities. The successful candidate will possess exceptional
communication and organizational skills along with sound
leadership, negotiation and diplomacy skills. The candidate will
also have the ability to work progressively within a broad
management perspective to include a high level of program
management; and work with a wide network of individuals internal
and external (e.g., high level senior officials, scholars, and
donors) to the university will be essential for success in this
The duties of this position will require the ability and willingness to travel internationally and to work in remote rural settings in Africa.
Required Qualification: Bachelor's degree and 8
years of related experience or a Master's degree and 6 years of
related experience or a Ph.D. or other doctoral/professional
program and 3 years of related experience. Experience must include
research, extension or education in one or more developing
countries. Demonstrated record of managing programs involving work
Preferred Qualifications: Advanced degree from an accredited institution with evidence of independent research; Additional experience in program management and leadership; Experience with international program management; Demonstrated knowledge of tropical crops and/or livestock, international nutrition, or agricultural technology; Research experience in a discipline related to agriculture, natural resources and/or rural development; Experience which demonstrates a proven record of cross cultural team work; Experience living or working abroad in a developing country; Foreign language coursework, training or knowledge in a language relevant to work in developing countries; Fiscal management experience; Work experience within a higher education institution.
