Washington University School of Medicine (WUSM), one of the world's great medical schools, is seeking talented candidates for the role of Assistant Dean for Finance (ADF). With an annual operating budget in excess of $1.7 billion, the School is currently ranked among the top medical schools in the country by U.S. News & World Report. Our clinical partners, Barnes-Jewish Hospital and St. Louis Children's Hospital, are perennially recognized as among the nation's best hospitals for excellence in patient care.

The Assistant Dean for Finance is an integral member of the Dean's senior management team, serving as the primary source of expertise for the School of Medicine's resource planning processes and is entrusted with providing the Dean with planning, fiscal and business support. The ADF manages the Budget Office and provides consultative advice to the senior administrative and business staff and other departmental administrators in developing the school's budget.
Washington University School of Medicine's research portfolio is over $460,000,000 per year comprised of several thousand annual awards with varying indirect cost recovery rates generating over $100 million annually. Grants and contracts trigger significant annual university cost allocation variations that impact budget development. Similar diversity and variations exists in funds generated though the provision of healthcare. A working knowledge and a strong understanding of the interdependence of education, research and patient care, and experience in each of these three missions within a complex research-intensive academic health center are essential.

The ADF must be adept leading in a complex environment, comfortable challenging historical assumptions while respecting the solid foundations that have been built, and overseeing innovative processes of providing financial services to the School of Medicine.

The successful candidate must possess a bachelor's degree with emphasis in finance or business, ten years of progressively responsible experience within a complex, research-intensive university, and demonstrated understanding of both FASB & GASB accounting principles. Candidates with a master's or other advanced degree in business or higher education administration, or a CPA designation, are preferred.
