Job Description: The University of Florida Institute for Child Health Policy and the Department of Health Outcomes and Policy, College of Medicine seeks a scientist for a full-time Assistant Scientist position with an expertise in Geographic Information Science. The candidate must demonstrate at least 5 years of specialized experience conducting analyses of vector and raster data, in either a professional and/or educational setting, using geographic information systems and raster based analysis programs. Specifically using ArcCatalog, ArcMap, Spatial Analyst, Geostatysitical Analyst, Arc ModelBuilder and Network Analyst at the ArcEditor/ArcInfo licensing level. Candidate must demonstrate hands on experience in performing spatial analyses using vector and raster data, geocoding addresses, creating and managing geodatabases, and contributing to research publications. Needs to have experience with cartography and map design as well. Major responsibilities include: Create maps and perform GIS analysis for various departmental projects. Support existing or new projects for large, complex geographic information collections. Participate in proposal writing with a team of collaborators. Integrate complex disparate spatial databases. Work with SAS database programmers on large data sets. Maintain geospatial databases, analyze geospatial data; generate cartographic products and charts; and produce related visual outputs based on statistical and other secondary data. The ideal Candidate will have demonstrated the following: 1. Knowledge of theory and principles of geospatial data management, and experience applying them in one or more of the following fields: health care systems, health policy, public health. 2. Skill in oral, written and cartographic communication of results of geospatial analyses to management officials from varying backgrounds. 3. Ability to independently conduct a spatial analysis from beginning to end, including: designing the spatial analysis, identifying and obtaining relevant spatial and nonspatial data sources, conducting the analysis with a variety of ArcGIS extensions and tools, and assembling the final report, including text, charts and maps. 4. Skill and experience with a variety of ESRI ArcGIS products, extensions and tools which may include as many of the following as possible: ArcCatalog, ArcMap, ArcInfo licensing level tools, Model Builder, Spatial Analyst, and Geostatistical Analyst. Demonstrated proficiency with Network Analyst. 5. Strong computer skills, knowledge of relational databases, ability to take on multiple projects simultaneously, and a self-starter with the desire and ability to take the lead on assigned tasks 6. Demonstrated active engagement in professional growth and peer-reviewed scholarship (e.g., publications, presentations, grants/contracts) that results in contributions to the body of knowledge in the discipline.
Minimum Requirements: Experience with metadata analysis, data conversion, cartography, and data quality control. Required Qualifications\: Ph.D. in Geography, or Climate-health science related field with strong GIS skills; Medical Geography specialty a plus. Strong technical skills using ArcGIS Desktop 10. Preferred Qualifications Knowledge and experience with any of the following are desired but not required: ArcGIS Model Builder, and ArcGIS Server, and\\:or the download, installation and use of ArcScripts.
