Jackson State University (JSU), located in metropolitan Jackson, MS, is the fourth largest state supported institution in Mississippi with an enrollment of approximately 9,200 students. Jackson State University is Mississippis Urban University and a Carnegie Foundation designated high research activity institution. 


The mission of the College of Public Service (CPS) is to educate students from diverse backgrounds for outstanding professional service and to develop local, national, and international innovative leaders in the professional academic disciplines represented in the Schools of Health Sciences, Policy and Planning, and Social Work.  All programs are based in the heart of the states urban capital and the central medical complex, with teaching locations at the Universitys Health Sciences Complex (Jackson Medical Mall), the Main Campus, and Universities Center, as well as in convenient off-campus clinical sites.


The CPS invites applications and nominations for a tenure-track faculty position to serve as Chair of the MSW/PhD Programs for fall 2014. Administrative positions are 12-month appointments and the proposed beginning date is July 1, 2014.


The School of Social Work offers the BSW, MSW, and PhD degrees in Social Work.  Both the BSW and MSW Programs are accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.  The Ph.D. Program is the only social work doctoral program offered in the state of Mississippi.  The School is rapidly expanding and has a diverse and committed cadre of faculty, staff, and students. The School provides many excellent opportunities for research through its Southern Institute for Mental Health Advocacy, Research and Training and its Mississippi Child Welfare Institute.


Responsibilities include administration and evaluation of academic programs, budget administration, advisement of students, provide guidance in both curriculum and faculty development, secure external funding; supervise support staff and evaluation of faculty and staff. This candidate would be expected to participate in academic governance at school, college and university levels, and professional achievement in the discipline.  It is expected that the candidate create and maintain an academic and collegial environment that fosters excellence in teaching, research, and community service.

      A MSW and a PhD in Social Work or a related discipline;

      A clear innovative vision for extending the School's regional, national, and international reach in research, teaching, and community engagement;

      Demonstrated experience with CSWE accreditation standards as they apply to graduate programs;

      Extensive success in attracting external competitive research funding;

      Demonstrated commitment to Social Work classroom and field education at all levels;

      An impressive track record of publications in national and international peer-reviewed Journals;

      Demonstrated track record in successful graduate student supervision;

      A track record of integrating high quality research with high quality teaching;

      Extensive experience mentoring junior faculty members; and

      A vision for supporting a healthy, collegial work environment.
