Jackson State University (JSU), located in metropolitan Jackson, is the 4th largest state supported institution in Mississippi with an enrollment of approximately 9,300 students. JSU is located in Jackson, the capital city of the State of Mississippi with a population of 400,000 in the metropolitan area. JSU is currently classified by the Carnegie Foundation as one of 103 Research Universities with High Research Activities (96 universities with Very High Research Activities). The University is composed of 5 academic colleges. The College of Science, Engineering, and Technology (CSET) consists of nine academic departments (Aerospace Studies; Biology; Chemistry & Biochemistry; Civil and Environmental Engineering; Computer Science; Electrical and Computer Engineering; Mathematics and Statistical Sciences; Physics, Atmospheric and Geoscience; and Technology). In CSET, over 2,000 students are enrolled in the undergraduate and graduate programs, and 124 full-time faculty members are involved in teaching, research and service. The College is poised to become one of the prominent science, engineering, and technology colleges in the country. Funded by the National institutes of Health, the Research Centers in Minority Institutions (RCMI)-Center for Environmental Health (CEH) at JSU was established in 1998. Its overarching goal is to develop a state-of-the-art biomedical research infrastructure to strengthen the biomedical research capabilities of JSU faculty and to provide opportunities for intra- and inter institutional biomedical research collaborations. Over the past 15 years, CEH 'has evolved as a "Center of Biomedical Research Excellence" focusing on the integration and application of innovative technologies to address important environmental health and health issues of concern to minority and underserved populations.
