The Division of Student Affairs comprises 20 campus departments that enhance the learning environment for students at the University of Georgia by stimulating the learning process, integrating the in-class and out-of-class experiences, promoting an environment conducive to growth and discovery and facilitating intellectual, spiritual, social, occupational, physical, cultural and emotional development. The Department of International Student Life (ISL) serves as an Archway to the World and an Archway to UGA for both international and U.S. students attending the University of Georgia.  With a number of exciting cultural events, programs, and services, students, faculty, staff, and community members alike can travel around the world without leaving Athens.  In addition to programs that enhance international awareness, ISL also provides orientation sessions for new international students, offers non-resident tax assistance as well as individual counseling, and advises approximately thirty international and multinational student organizations.



The Director of International Student Life reports to the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs and serves as the departmental manager responsible for supervising the ISL staff, developing the vision for programs and services established by the office, and managing all fiscal, human capital and other resources.  The Director oversees and facilitates the development, advising, implementation and evaluation of a variety of cross-cultural and international programs that ensure developmental and academic growth, promote the success and retention of UGAs undergraduate and graduate international/multinational student population, and educate the larger campus and community.


Job Description

The Director serves as the departmental manager for the Department of International Student Life and sets the overall vision for the office and staff.  He/she establishes and works to fulfill a strategic plan for the department aligned with those of the Division of Student Affairs and the University. He/she provides autonomous leadership and supports students, staff, faculty and the local community on topics related to international/multinational students and internationalization efforts.  He/she supervises, trains, and evaluates one (1) senior coordinator for ISL, one (1) administrative assistant, two (2) graduate assistants, one (1) Masters in Social Work intern, and four (4) student employees working in ISL. 


The Director oversees the development, implementation, and evaluation of major office programming such as International Student Orientation, International Coffee Hour, Global Leadership Institute, International Street Festival, International Graduation Ceremony, and other campus-wide programs and services for the continual development of an international student community that encourages interaction and cooperation among all international students and U.S. students.  He/she ensures programming efforts meet Student Affairs Learning and Development Objectives (SALDOs).


The Director ensures that programs and services are meeting the needs of unit constituents.  He/she establishes a comprehensive assessment plan for the department and utilizes appropriate techniques to determine the effectiveness of the programs and services offered. 


The Director counsels students as necessary regarding a variety of personal, developmental, and academic concerns, making referrals to appropriate services.  He/she serves as a resource person to faculty, staff and students working with international/multinational student programs/issues.


The Director is responsible for the fiscal management and solvency of the department. He/she develops and oversees ISL operating and programming budgets, UGA Foundation accounts, and provides oversight to over 30 student organizations budgets advised by ISL staff. He/she ensures that staff and students are following all University policies and procedures regarding expenditures.


The Director provides leadership, support, and oversight for ISL staff to work with 30 international/multinational student organizations, World Leaders (international orientation leaders), the Non-resident Tax Program, and all associated volunteers. He/she conducts leadership training programs as needed.


The Director serves as a member of the Student Affairs Leadership Team (SALT) and participates fully in division-wide leadership initiatives and committee/task-force management. He/she is expected to provide insight and feedback on division-wide decision-making and planning processes.


The Director serves as the liaison to the Office of International Education to facilitate opportunities for collaboration and coordination.


The Director facilitates collaborative partnerships with a variety of on- and off-campus departments and organizations, including Academic Affairs, Public Service & Outreach, Office of Institutional Diversity, Office of International Education, University Payroll, Student Financial Aid, Human Resources, and other organizations/departments in order to facilitate the implementation and coordination of needed programs and services. 


The Director continuously seeks alternative funding sources for ISL.  He/she works in conjunction with the Student Affairs Director of Private Gifts to identify and enhance relationships with donors and alumni and coordinates efforts associated with the Student Affairs Annual Fund for ISL. He/she is heavily involved with the fundraising, development, and stewardship efforts of the department.


The Director oversees the development and distribution of various publications to keep international and multinational students, as well as others, aware of programs/issues related to diversity, internationalization, and interculturalism on campus.


The Director actively engages in service to the University community through participating in various committees, and developing and maintaining collaborative working relationships with colleagues.


The Director provides support and assistance for the Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs as needed by attending/serving on various campus and community committees.

Requires a master's degree in education, college student affairs administration, counseling, adult education, international education (or related field of study), or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

The successful candidate will possess the following preferred qualifications:

  • Minimum of five years of experience in supervision, budget management, student advising and program development.
  • Considerable knowledge regarding the concerns and issues of international/multinational students (both undergraduate and graduate), including knowledge and understanding of multiple identities.
  • Extensive background in social justice education, multiculturalism, international education, ally development, and service oriented initiatives.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and fiscal management skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to navigate and manage a large, complex public university.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a team and with individuals and groups with a variety of identities, cultures, and backgrounds.
  • Understanding and engagement with issues that affect underrepresented student populations and their academic and personal success.
  • Strong interpersonal, management and creative problem-solving skills.


Available to work weeknights and weekends, as required.
