Sacred Heart University (SHU) seeks an experienced, dynamic and innovative leader to serve as the Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences in a vibrant academic community that has experienced extraordinary growth and success over the past several decades. Reporting to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Dean provides leadership and budgetary oversight for 21 baccalaureate major programs, eight additional baccalaureate minor programs and 11 graduate degree programs and certificates; drives efforts in assessment of learning outcomes and faculty development; collaborates with faculty across departments and colleges to develop the core curriculum and implement new academic programs; and demonstrates leadership in campus-wide efforts in student enrollment and retention, college advancement, alumni outreach and fundraising. The Dean is a University leader in the preservation, transmission and development of the Catholic intellectual traditions and an articulate spokesperson for the value of the liberal arts.
The successful candidate will be an academic leader with a distinguished record of teaching and scholarship and a creative, open, collaborative organizational manager. S/he will hold a Ph.D. in an academic department within the College of Arts & Sciences and the rank of full professor. The candidate will have experience in academic leadership at the departmental level or above for at least two different full-time and non-concurrent positions, and a record of developing academic programs, recruiting and cultivating a diverse faculty, promoting a dynamic learning environment and fostering scholarly activities. The ideal candidate will also have a track record of securing external sources of funding.
Sacred Heart University is a co-educational, independent, comprehensive institution of higher learning rooted in the liberal arts and the Catholic intellectual traditions. Since its inception, the University has grown from a small commuter campus to a leading regional institution with an international presence. Today, enrollment reaches over 6,600 students, making SHU the second-largest Catholic university in New England. The University offers more than 50 degree programs at the associate's, bachelor's, master's and doctoral levels. The institution's 4,300 undergraduate and 1,700 graduate students benefit from a 13:1 student-to-faculty ratio, an average class size of 22 and a financial aid commitment of more than $37 million annually, which allows more than 90 percent of all full-time undergraduates to receive financial aid.
SHU's academic signature is its Core Curriculum and the Common Core: The Human Journey. This is a rigorous curriculum that immerses students in a coherent and integrated understanding of the arts and sciences and Catholic intellectual life. In 2007, SHU was invited to become a member of the Association of American Colleges & Universities (AAC&U) Core Commitments Leadership Consortium in recognition of its strong core curriculum. The University has recently reviewed and approved revisions to the Common Core.
