The University of Rochester has experienced a renaissance in its advancement operations over the past several years. Led by President Joel Seligman and a dedicated, determined board of trustees, the U of R has completely transformed its fundraising and alumni engagement operations, bringing them to the state of the art. As a result of its aggressive plans and their implementation, the University currently boasts more than $1 billion in commitments toward the $1.2 billion goal of its Meliora Challenge campaign, putting it well ahead of the anticipated campaign timeline.
To build on this momentum and to position the University for long-term advancement success, the University now seeks a senior vice president and chief advancement officer (SVP) to lead its program and team.
Reporting to the president and serving as a member of his senior administrative team, the senior vice president will lead a staff of over 250 and manage a budget of over $30 million. He or she will work directly with the president, deans, and directors; board members; and other highly placed volunteers to ensure the success of the current campaign effort and to begin immediately to conceptualize and to plan the continuum of advancement activities and campaigns that will ensure the Universitys long-term success.
The SVP will be a leader in word and deed, balancing leadership and managerial responsibilities with active engagement with the Universitys top prospects, in partnership with an exceptionally successful fundraising president. Supporting these efforts will be staff that has been aggressively recruited from top programs around the country, and the retention and continuing development of that staff and its capabilities will be one of the SVPs most important tasks.
To be successful, the senior vice president and chief advancement officer will be an advancement professional of considerable experience and ability, with a track record of increasingly responsible and successful leadership in institutions of similar size and complexity. Experience working with the philanthropic program of a major academic medical center is highly preferred. He or she will have played a leading role in a campaign of similar size and breadth; more important, the SVP will possess the ability to conceptualize and to execute overarching strategies that will enhance philanthropic support in both the short and long terms. Perhaps above all, the successful candidate will understand the holistic nature of the advancement enterprise and will possess the interpersonal and relationship-building skills and the powers of communication and collaboration necessary to enlist the active involvement and support of a diverse community — including deans, faculty, students, staff, administrators, alumni, parents, donors, and community members — in the Universitys success.
