Carolina Union

The Carolina Union offers programs, services and facilities to the entire campus community. The Union provides cultural, social, educational and entertainment programs sponsored by the Carolina Union Activities Board to create opportunities for campus members to engage in debate, conversation and interaction around current issues.  As the living room of the University, the Union not only provides many of the services needed by the campus community, but also provides an opportunity for UNC students to express their social, recreational and cultural interests.

 

Position Description

The Carolina Union, a department within Student Affairs at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, seeks a visionary leader to develop intentional developmental initiatives for its diverse student population.  The purpose of this position is to provide leadership, oversight, and direction for the administrative functions within the Office of Student Life and Leadership including the student activities board, leadership development, student organizations, and student legislative groups. The Senior Associate Director plays a pivotal role and works closely with students to initiate, plan, develop, and facilitate events and activities to enhance the quality of student life and University experience for all students. The position will work to ensure that student programming, leadership programs and activities are consistent with the mission and goals of the University and contribute to an enriched and robust quality of student life.  The position reports to the Director of the Carolina Union.

Responsibilities

 

Student Life and Experiential Education

  • Directs and provides leadership and direction for innovative student-centered activities, all events, operations and functions of the Office of Student Life and Leadership
  • Directs and provides leadership for over 650 student organizations, challenging students to think creatively, analytically, and critically
  • Directs and provides leadership for the Carolina Union Activities Board (CUAB), which is a group of students working with staff to enhance life at Carolina through high-quality programming and events for the entire University community, including weekly films, art exhibits in the Carolina Union Art Gallery, comedy shows, FallFest, SpringFest and concerts to name a few
  • Develops proposals for policies and procedures that align with facility use guidelines and that  foster student learning and success
  • Responsible for assessing and managing the risk associated with student events and programs
  • Directs and facilitates orientation and training programs for student employees

Supervision

  • Directs, supervises, evaluates, and provides leadership for direct reports within the Office of Student Life and Leadership
  • Meets regularly with staff to facilitate professional development opportunities related to their role

 

Assessment

  • Provides leadership for the Excellence In Action initiative within the Carolina Union
  • Responsible for assessment of educational outcomes in student activities and leadership
  • Utilizes both qualitative and quantitative research methods
  • Constructs and delivers reports on findings to key stakeholders
  • Conducts literature reviews and benchmarking of best practices to inform future directions

Carolina Union Leadership Team

  • Works as a leadership team member with the Carolina Union in decision-making, problem solving, strategic planning, and assessment 

 

Financial Planning and Budgeting

  • Responsible for financial planning and budgeting for the Office of Student Life and Leadership
  • Accountable for financial decisions and recommendations

 

Committees and Professional Development

  • Actively coordinates and/or participates in appropriate University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill committees and task forces
  • Participates actively in professional associations and programs at the regional and national levels

Educational Requirements and Experience

  • Masters degree in Higher Education, college student personnel, or related field
  • 5-7 years progressive experience in advising and administering student leadership programming in a higher education setting
  • Minimum 5 years professional experience supervising full-time staff

 

Experience

For full consideration, a minimum of five years of progressively responsible work experience in student activities, student leadership development, student affairs, or from a related field. The successful candidate should be student-focused and a team player with a demonstrated record of strategic leadership.

 

Specific Skills and Competencies

Required:

  • Demonstrated expertise working with diverse student populations and fostering inclusive environments within an educational setting
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands
  • Knowledge of student development theory, issues, and trends in the field
  • Working knowledge of best practices in student affairs
  • Demonstrated ability in assessment of student services and use of assessment results to make changes that improve the delivery of services and programs for students
  • Excellent leadership, organization, interpersonal, and oral/written/presentation skills
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to work evening and weekend hours

 

Preferred:

  • Experience in transformational change and organizational development
  • Experience conducting a CAS Assessment and/or self-study
  • A demonstrable track record of leading, motivating and managing professional staff teams both directly and indirectly to achieve significant, sustainable service improvements and outstanding results
  • Strong problem-solving and interpersonal skills, the ability to drive innovative thinking and provide superior leadership to staff in order to successfully implement the strategy
  • Experience working with, and creating both departmental and student organization budgets
  • Expertise to develop, articulate and implement a vision for a student activities and leadership development area
  • Experience in assessment of educational outcomes in student activities and leadership
  • Experience with assessing the risk associated with student events and programs
  • Experience working effectively with administrative and academic partners within the University
  • A positive attitude, high energy, innovation, and creativity

 

Salary

Salary is salary commensurate with education and experience.
