Columbia Basin College ("CBC" or the "College") seeks an outstanding and enthusiastic individual as an Assistant Professor of Surgical Technology for a tenure track faculty position.  The faculty member will be responsible for the delivery of instruction to students, including instructional design and providing direct instruction to students in accordance with workload requirements for the clinical lecture/lab mode.  This position will report directly to the Executive Dean for Career and Technical Education.


Note:  The base salary for this position is $46,350 - $49,350 for standard 3 quarter contract (Fall, Winter & Spring), with an additional summer contract of salary range $10,270 - $10,936. This is a four-quarter program with instruction required over the summer quarter for additional compensation on an extra-contractual basis.  The contract for summer quarter is for 39 days and is compensated at the daily rate of the full-time position. 

Additionally, this position is assigned Surgical Technology Director duties for the academic year (July to June) and is paid an additional $6,800 stipend contract.



  • Develop, prepare, and teach college-approved courses in accordance with approved course descriptions and class schedules, making provision for continuity of instructional assignments and class schedules;
  • Develop syllabi, and reading lists for each course taught and update annually;
  • Maintain a minimum of five regularly scheduled office hours each week at times that provide reasonable opportunities for students to meet with faculty;
  • Maintain, submit, and retain accurate academic records, including verification of class rosters and student grades, by dates requested by the College to comply with state and federal records retention laws;
  • Orient students at the beginning of each class to syllabi and addenda, subject to subsequent modification and notice to students;
  • Engage in shared governance by participating in department, division and College committees and assisting in the formulation of policy pertaining to educational programs;
  • Participate in commencement ceremonies;
  • Develop and attend professional improvement activities in order to maintain contact with one's academic discipline, including teaching/learning processes and/or development of knowledge in one's field of specialization;
  • Participate in outreach activities to promote educational programs;
  • Participate in special College projects, surveys, and studies;
  • Assist in the preparation of reports as needed by College units (e.g., Student Services, Grants Office, Athletic Department, Institutional Effectiveness) and by the College in general (i.e., for accreditations, program review and so forth);
  • Develop new instructional materials, techniques, course offerings or major revisions of the same;
  • Participate in community service activities consistent with the College's mission;
  • Participate in student career development and related advising or mentoring activities and special retention programs; and
  • Attend College-mandated trainings, professional development activities and/or meetings.



  • Certified Surgical Technologist;
  • A minimum of five (5) years experience either in the operating room scrub role or as an instructor in surgical technology, or a combination of both, within the past ten (10) years;
  • Possess an Associate's degree or higher;
  • Experience and/or training as an educator;
  • Current knowledge of the surgical technology profession; and
  • Possess proficiency in instructional methodology, curriculum design, and program planning.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • An Associates degree or higher, with a concentration in surgical technology. 



The start date for this open position is June 30, 2014 with the start of Summer Quarter 2014.  A summer quarter contract will be issued for the quarter, though optimally, some advance work under an extended contract in preparation for assuming responsibility for the program is desired. 
The tenure-track position begins September 1, 2014 to coincide with the regular tenure-track probationary cycle.  Please note: Tenure track is a system in which the faculty member is evaluated as a candidate for tenure under the College's tenure review process and Chapter 28B.50 RCW.  Schedule varies, assignment may include evening and weekend classes.
