Career Advisor, Shepherd University 


Type of Position:  12-month FT, non-tenure track, clinical faculty position. 


Job Summary/Basic Function:


Counsel undergraduate students on career options and resources, guiding their development of job search skills through the following efforts:

-Provide classroom presentations and/or workshops on resume building, interview skills, graduate school applications and major/minor exploration.

-Facilitate the annual "CareerFest" and other career-related fairs as deemed necessary

-Maintain information board/career-related databases such as "Career Central" and "Jobweb"

Oversee the administration of CLEP tests for Shepherd students


Secondary Responsibilities:


Work closely with admissions and financial aid staff to advise new students;


Provide academic advising to returning students, individually or in groups, about University policies, programs of study and degree options.  Provide students with information about alternatives and possible consequences of academic decisions;


Serve as primary advisor for an assigned group of undeclared students;


Establish and maintain relationships with academic departments in order to understand and clarify departmental expectations. Maintain current knowledge of degree programs and requirements and to aid with student career exploration


Additional Expectations:


Supervise a graduate student assistant;


Collect, analyze and develop statistics in the following areas:

-Employment and/or future plans for current graduating seniors


Participate on committees as requested;


Participate in professional conferences and other self-directed professional development activities;


Teach two credits of First-Year Experience (FYEX) courses per year;


Work closely with the Academic Support Center to connect students to academic support



Minimum Qualifications:

Master's degree

Minimum of two years experience in career services or career development, preferably in a college or university setting

Excellent inter-personal skills

Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Excellent supervisory and organizational skills

Proficient in the use of computers; website maintenance, career database resources and social media applications; ability to be flexible in terms of working hours in order to maximize availability within the Advising Assistance Center.



Preferred Qualifications:

College level teaching experience

Experience in Higher Education

Banner and DegreeWorks experience

Microsoft Office Suite experience
