Primary Purpose of Position:
The primary purpose of this position is to perform inspection, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of life safety and fire systems at North Carolina Central University. The position will also assist with life and fire safety training, conducting inspections of life and fire safety equipment (such as portable fire extinguishers and AEDs), and perform building inspections to ensure compliance with NC State Building and Fire Code and applicable NFPA standards. In addition, this position will coordinate with fire and life safety vendors when their services are required. This position will serve as the subject matter expert for all matters relating to fire protection systems, including fire alarms.

Minimum Education/Experience:
Associate’s Degree in Electronics; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of NFPA72, NEC, NCBC, NCDOI, NCSCO, and IFC codes, rules, and regulations to perform installations and upgrades of supported systems.
  • Recent experience in the fire service industry or fire alarm industry and knowledge of and experience in programming, repair, and service of fire detection systems.
  • Recent experience in the installation and acceptance testing of fire detection and suppression systems.
  • Ability to read and work from blueprints, drawings, and sketches.
  • Knowledge of fire alarm design requirements and ability to read and interpret fire alarm shop drawings and other documents.
  • Understanding of construction practices regarding fire alarm systems.
  • Knowledge of portable fire extinguishers and monthly inspection requirements per NFPA 10 and 29 CFR 1910.157.
  • Ability to interact directly and professionally with a diverse customer base.
  • Ability to lift moderately heavy objects and perform tasks that involve walking, standing, bending, stooping, and working in awkward positions.
  • Ability to work independently with little or no supervision.
  • Ability to serve as a mandatory employee and report to work in support of essential University operations, including during adverse weather or other emergency conditions.
  • Proficiency in MS Office suite.
