Context of Job

The Department of Animal and Food Sciences (ANFS) (http://canr.udel.edu/ANFS/) at the University of Delaware (UD) aims to enhance our department strengths in Food Safety, Animal Health and One Health by hiring an Assistant Professor of Animal Product Food Safety and Quality for Fall 2024. ANFS is seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor (65% research, 30% teaching, 5% service) for a nine-month, academic-year appointment. A Ph.D. or DVM/VMD with relevant post-doctoral training or equivalent experience in an animal health-related discipline is required.

A successful candidate will develop an innovative research program that utilizes basic and applied research methods to address knowledge gaps and critical needs in pre-harvest animal agricultural systems. The department is seeking an animal scientist who works on pre-harvest technologies/approaches in animals to reduce post-harvest pathogens and public health hazards in the environment. The successful candidate’s research program may include a variety of approaches such as: diet manipulation including the use of probiotics; the development of models or diagnostic tools; novel management tools designed to reduce pathogen prevalence on-farm; or using genomic selection or immunomodulation (e.g. vaccines) of animals for resistance to human pathogens. Individuals with a focus on poultry research are encouraged to apply given the importance to the Delmarva area, and dairy, beef, and swine production researchers are also welcome to apply.

Teaching responsibilities will include 2-3 courses per academic year, including teaching core department courses and an advanced-level One Health-related course. The successful candidate will be expected to teach, advise undergraduates in academic and career planning, mentor undergraduate, graduate and post-doctoral researchers, recruit students, and develop productive outreach collaborations. The Department of Animal and Food Sciences, located in Newark and Georgetown, Delaware, is one of the four departments in UD’s College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR). This highly collegial department has faculty focused in the areas of animal sciences and food sciences who are actively engaged in the core research areas of infectious diseases, genomics, immunology, physiology, nutrition, and microbiology including food safety. The Animal and Food Sciences undergraduate program is a national leader with over 400 students enrolled, and we place a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary research and discovery-based learning. The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources includes a 350-acre agricultural experiment station and teaching farm, Allen Laboratory (biosafety level 3 facility), and the Lasher Diagnostic Laboratory. The primary research and teaching laboratory building (Worrilow Hall) recently underwent a $38-million renovation, providing state-of-the-art laboratories and core facilities for use by the successful candidate.
