Typical hours are Monday-Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Occasional time on evenings and weekends may be needed to meet the needs of the department. This position will be directly responsible for staffing the Financial Aid office during peak periods, such as the beginning of the school year, open houses, etc.

Position Summary

To strengthen the partnership between Admissions and Financial Aid and ensure the University provides the best resources for our future and current students, this position reports directly to the Senior Director of Admissions and Financial Aid.

The ideal candidate will have comprehensive financial aid expertise, a strong understanding of and commitment to the importance and value of a liberal arts education, and the ability to leverage financial aid to recruit and retain students. The director has a highly visible role in proactively helping students to make financial aid decisions.

The Director of Financial Aid will develop and implement a long-term strategy for fundraising and assertively packaging Financial Aid awards to maximize recruitment and retention of student. The Director awards university scholarships strategically to optimize impact on the recruitment of prospective students.

The Financial Aid director is expected to be a credible source of information for families and the University. She/he will be expected to cultivate relationships and instill confidence in families that they are receiving the best information for making decisions and assessing alternatives related to Financial Aid.

The Director of Financial Aid is responsible for: (1) all aspects of UNC Asheville financial aid, including strategic planning, budgeting, the application process, needs analysis, calculation and administration of awards, loan processing and certification, counseling of current and prospective students, administration of federal work study programs, maintaining and updating all on-line and print publications relating to financial aid; and (2) day-to-day administrative operations related to the financial aid office, through supervision, oversight, and training of office staff.

This is a strategic position that requires knowledge of daily operations and the willingness to work along side staff to provide direct service to students, during urgent or high volume periods.

This position requires the following:

  • The ability to interface credibly and comfortably with faculty, current and prospective students, alumni, advisors, and university administrators in connection with the University’s financial aid programs and student financial needs.

  • A comprehensive knowledge of financial aid programs and regulations including both governmental and private loan programs, and experience with university accounting, budgeting, and disbursement policies and procedures.

  • Comfort with developing and making presentations to diverse audiences on financial aid programs, budgeting, and financial planning, as well as providing one-on-one financial aid counseling to current and prospective students.

  • Supervisory, management, and team-work abilities in order ensure the smooth day-to-day operations of a busy office.

  • Knowledge of and a willingness to stay abreast of general information on the regulations.

  • Ability to coach, develop, and mentor team members. Work with team members to expand their understanding of the Financial Aid field, as well as their areas of interest in professional development and cross-training.

UNC Asheville is comprised of approximately 3600 students and is nationally known as a Best Value in higher education. The University awards approximately $23 million in federal and state financial aid. In 2012, approximately 66% of our student body received financial aid from loans, grants, or scholarships. As a result 78% of the students receiving financial aid had their need met.


Required Education/Experience/Skills

A Bachelor’s degree and at least five years of experience as a financial aid professional working with or in a post-secondary institution at the management or consulting level, or equivalent training and experience.

Preferred Education/Experience/Skills

Masters degree preferred. Seven to ten years of progressive experience in financial aid at the management or consulting level at a post-secondary institution or working with a post-secondary institution is preferred. The demonstrated ability to work effectively with university constituencies in a high-visibility, high-stakes financial aid and admissions environment is also highly desired. Excellent interpersonal, communication, analytical, management, and organizational skills are also preferred as well as active participation in professional organizations. The preferred candidate will have a thorough understanding of NCAA rules and regulations as it relates to awarding aid. Experience with both the strategic and operational aspects of higher-ed financial aid, and supervisory/managerial experience in a professional office environment is desired. Experience with Banner is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Working knowledge of federal and state assistance programs and their accompanying regulations. In-depth knowledge of federal and state compliance requirements and experience in submission of federal and state reports/audits. Experience in formulating and implementing financial aid policy. Supervisory and leadership skills to direct and coordinate work groups. Interpersonal skills to work effectively with diverse groups including faculty, staff, students and families. Candidate should have a thorough understanding of NCAA rules and regulations as it relates to awarding aid.
