The Director of the Office of Research is responsible for leading and directing the University’s program for pre-award extramural sponsorship. The Director is charged with supporting the proposal submission processes as well as developing strategic approaches to support the research community in the processing of related financial and non-financial documents required under University, sponsor and federal requirements. The Director will take an active administrative role in setting goals, developing processes, establishing metrics and implementing programs to efficiently process all documents. The Director is charged with all hiring and supervision of staff within the Office.


The Director reports to and assists the Vice Provost for Research on a wide range of projects related to externally funded awards.


In support of these roles, the Director must maintain a working knowledge of and ensures compliance with all federal, state, and foundation policies, procedures, and guidelines for the conduct of research.


Additional responsibilities of the Director include:


- Implementing pre-award training programs for faculty and university departmental administrative personnel.

- Coordinating processes with the Health Sciences Research Administration.

- Maintains collaborative partnerships with other offices within the University in fulfillment of the mission on relevant issues, including the Office of Technology Management for intellectual property issues, Office of General Council for legal issues, Export Control Officer, and Research Conduct and Compliance Office on human and animal compliance issues.

- Oversee the dissemination of electronic information about funding opportunities and changes in sponsor requirements to faculty and staff on a regular basis.


This position requires excellent managerial and work flow process design/implementation skills. In addition, the Director should possess good interpersonal and communication skills and a demonstrated ability to lead and facilitate change. The ability to work effectively with senior administrators, faculty, staff, and external constituents in a wide spectrum of academic disciplines and fields is necessary.


A minimum of seven years of experience in an intermediate or senior-level professional and/ or administrative position is required.


Demonstrated managerial experience in sponsored projects administration in a central office of a major research university or related academic environment is preferred.



A Master’s degree is preferred, but a Bachelor’s degree with relevant experience may be accepted.


The position requires excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a demonstrated ability to lead and facilitate change. The ability to work effectively with senior administrators, faculty, staff, and external constituents in a wide spectrum of academic disciplines and fields is necessary. 


Other relevant skills include: knowledge of university policies and procedures related to the conduct of research; experience negotiating agreements and working with government and industry; an ability to review and interpret policies and procedures involving complex problems; the capacity to exercise independent judgment; and an understanding of the challenges of grant administration within the framework of larger institutional goals.


A minimum of seven years experience in an intermediate or senior-level professional and/ or administrative position and an employment history that demonstrates a progressive increase in responsibility are required. Experience in a research administrative environment critical. Demonstrated managerial experience in sponsored projects administration in a major research university or related academic environment is preferred.
