Lewis University invites applications for a one-year Assistant Professor position in the Physics Department beginning August 2014.   A Ph.D. or ABD in Physics or a closely related field is required. An experimental background and experience teaching undergraduates are preferred.  The successful candidate must be committed to excellence in teaching and to contributing to the growth the physics program. Responsibilities include teaching a range of physics courses and labs mostly at the general education and introductory levels.


Lewis University, located 35 miles from downtown Chicago and near two national laboratories, is a Catholic and Lasallian university.

Position description:

  • Teaching is a primary focus at Lewis University. The minimum teaching load is 12 credit hours per semester. Since the physics department is small, the candidate is expected to teach courses and labs at all levels. Most courses will be at the general education and introductory level though the opportunity to teach an upper-level majors course may arise. A willingness to teach across the curriculum is necessary, and a background in experimental physics is highly desirable.
  • The candidate is expected to attend Department and College Faculty meetings and engage in departmental activities. The candidate is also encouraged to be involved at the College and/or University level.
  • As this is a one year appointment, the candidate is not expected to establish an undergraduate research program. However, there are opportunities to collaborate on projects in optics, high energy physics, physics/astronomy education research, and nanomaterials at Lewis if desired.
