DUTIES: Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Enrollment Management Services, the Director of University Outreach is the administrative officer with the primary responsibility for the recruitment of new undergraduate students to achieve enrollment goals. The director is responsible planning, managing, and evaluating recruiting strategies and providing strategic direction and leadership to market, recruit, and yield highly competitive students. The Director will be responsible for directing all communication including publications and emerging technology communications (e.g., social media). The candidate should be goal-oriented and have experience in managing in a team-focused environment.

The Director will oversee and manage the daily operation of the University Outreach and Orientation Offices; manage unity budget and monitor fiscal expenditures to insure efficiency and sound budget decisions; hire, train, supervise, and direct the work of 3 Student Services Professionals, and approximately 10 student assistants. The Director will collaborate with Academic Deans and Associate Deans to develop and implement strategic recruitment plans and develop university-wide recruitment publications in consultation and collaboration with University Communications and maintain accurate website and web presence. University Outreach works closely with CAMP, Educational Outreach Program, Educational Talent Search, Parent Institute for Quality Education-PIQE, California Student Opportunity & Access Program – (Cal SOAP), and CalCorps.

The Director will provide comprehensive orientation programs for first-year, direct from high school students and families, coordinate all components of transfer student orientation and other student transition initiatives. The candidate will also assist with Student Success and Enrollment Management events (particularly those targeted at academic preparedness and college readiness). The Director will review and analyze enrollment and other demographic data to establish enrolment goals for CSUB’s service region as well as outside of our service region and out-of-state; develop and maintain successful collaborative relationships with school districts including establishing formal partnerships with the Kern County High School District and CSUB’s feeder community colleges; oversee and implement special outreach programs such as Kern County College Night and the Council of Counselors Initiative; and represent CSU Bakersfield at local high schools, community colleges, CSU Counselor Conferences and community sponsored programs.

The Director will plan, coordinate, and implement numerous outreach programs designed to promote a college-going culture; yield events to increase enrollment at California State University, Bakersfield; a campus visit program to bring visitors to tour the campus; and attend counselor conferences for campus updates. The Director will write and submit the annual reports; represent the campus at college night and transfer day programs, conduct oral presentations, and meet with prospective students; keep up-to-date regarding policies and procedures related to admissions, academic programs, general education, and related university information.

QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s Degree; knowledge of University policies and procedures related to functional area; experience and demonstrated with high school and community college student recruitment; understanding of the use of technology and social media with regard to recruiting first-time freshmen and transfer students; three or more years of experience in management and supervision of professional staff members; excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work with internal and external constituents, such as faculty, deans, and guidance counselors/school administration; demonstrated experience in organizing special events such as, Leadership Conferences and Open House programs for prospective students; knowledge and experience in understanding the “enrollment funnel’, that is, prospects, applicants, admits, and matriculated students; work experience in diverse cultural institution; budget management experience; ability to make data informed decisions about strategies and resources to achieve stated goals. Incumbent must successfully pass a background/fingerprint check.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s degree in higher education, student affairs, counseling or related program; demonstrated engagement in civic/community organizations; 1-2 years of professional experience in student affairs, enrollment management, or other related field; demonstrated understanding of enrollment and recruitment initiatives; ability to work with diverse constituencies; demonstrated skills in event planning and program development; ability to develop and facilitate training sessions; ability to respond to crises and emergencies and troubleshoot unexpected issues or problems. Effective oral and written communication skills. Ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently and make independent decisions in keeping with the level of the position. Demonstrated ability to use advanced techniques in word processing (MS Word), spreadsheet (MS Excel), and presentation software (MS PowerPoint). Ability to maintain an orientation scheduling database. Skills in maintaining and using queries in database software. Experience with, and appreciation of 1st generation, low income and multicultural student issues. Familiar with pre-college programs, summer bridge-type programs, and TRIO programs. Experience with community collaborations and outreach. Ability to speak Spanish fluently.
