Director, Stanford Program In New York (SNYC) - 62191


The Director of the Stanford in New York City program (SNYC) will help realize a new Stanford undergraduate academic program in NYC and once launched, oversee the program’s academic and administrative management and its day to day operations. S/he will manage staff to achieve teaching mission and goals and partner with and/or advise faculty leadership on departmental affairs.

Note: This is a two-year fixed term position.


Teaching and Academic Program Management

• Develop and implement an integrated curriculum, focused on the arts, architecture, design, and urban studies.

• Design and teach one course per quarter, the required “Internship Seminar”.

• In association with the home campus, launch new and innovative courses that make use of unique local opportunities.

• Identify, hire, evaluate, and coordinate local faculty to teach courses at an appropriate academic level. Evaluate teaching performance and effectiveness on a regular basis.

• Promote interaction among local faculty and between local faculty and the Stanford faculty member in residence.

• In collaboration with the home campus staff, develop student application criteria, interview students, evaluate applications, and prioritize waitlists.

• Organize cultural visits, field trips, and other student events as appropriate.

• Define, develop, and enable student and faculty use of local libraries, archives, and resources

• Help supervise research projects, independent study, or individual directed reading.

• Partner with home campus assessment specialist to design and conduct periodic evaluations of the program’s effectiveness and rigor, and adjust or revamp as appropriate.

• Develop and implement a guest speaker program coordinated with the particular quarter’s curriculum.

• Develop and establish linkages with local academic communities, academic institutions, government agencies, alumni, and donors. Maintain communication with local peers directing similar programs.

• Maintain awareness of emerging academic directions in areas relevant to SNYC, including the work of outstanding scholars.

Student Life Oversight

• Maintain a regular presence in the program in order to provide advice, counseling, and resources to students on a variety of matters related to their academic, intellectual, and personal well-being.

• Oversee the coordination of student living arrangements, including regular engagement with Educational Housing Services, the local provider.

• Provide leadership in execution of orientation programs for incoming students.

• In collaboration with campus student affairs staff, respond to unpredictable personal, health, psychological, and academic problems as needed.

• Stay in contact with local security and safety officials and brief students as appropriate.

• Define objectives of social and cultural events for students and maintain general oversight.

• Maintain discipline in the program, where necessary, and handle student emergencies, including responding to parental concerns.

• Maintain awareness of the mental and physical health and well-being of student participants including regular consultation with the home campus as needed.

• Establish and oversee clear access to local mental and physical health professionals.

• Facilitate student involvement in community service activities.

Administration and Budget Management

• Ensure that operations of all phases of the program are in compliance with all policies, regulations, and laws, including NYC and NY state laws, governing Stanford University, and with the University’s own policies.

• Manage program staff, including hiring, training, motivating, evaluating performance, and making salary recommendations to achieve program goals.

• Work directly with campus VPO staff to prepare and manage annual budget; manage all fiscal activities, including authorization of expenditures, review, and approval of monthly cash reports.

• Develop and maintain community relationships. Manage relations with partner universities, local governmental agencies, and organizations to ensure compliance with all applicable local laws and regulations.

• Review contracts and other binding arrangements—in association with local counsel and/or appropriate Stanford offices—in furtherance of program goals, covering housing, facilities, internships, and other program aspects.

• Maintain contact with local public safety to facilitate the operations of the program.

• In coordination with home campus staff, oversee the technological infrastructure of program facilities and its uses for academic and administrative purposes. Manage NYC facilities.

• Manage logistics to support effective participation of the in-residence Stanford faculty member.

• Host Stanford University visitors, as appropriate. Maintain contact with, and host advocates for the program, including donors and alumni.

Internship Development

• Manage the development and maintenance of student internship opportunities with local, state, cultural, multinational, corporate, non-government, and government entities for approximately 20 Stanford students in year one and 40 students in years two and three of the pilot.

• Match the program’s students with appropriate internships.

• Engage in frequent communication with internship partners to ensure the quality of the students’ and the hosting organizations’ experience.

• Ensure that internships are conducted in full compliance with NYC, NY state, and national laws and Stanford policies and procedures regarding internships.

• Partner with home campus assessment specialist to monitor and enhance the internship aspect of the program, including securing regular feedback from the students and the hosts.

These duties may be adjusted as needed to suit the business and academic needs of the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education (VPUE) and the University.



Education and Experience

• Earned doctorate, with preference for a field relevant to arts, architecture, design, or urban studies. In some cases another terminal degree (e.g. M.F.A.) with substantial relevant experience may also be considered.

• 3+ years of successful university-level teaching experience; teaching evaluations will be requested.

• Demonstrated professional administrative experience in higher education managerial role.

• Professional experience with undergraduates in and out of the classroom at an institution similar to Stanford preferred, but not required.

• Experience with experiential education; experience with internships preferred, but not required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• In depth knowledge of New York's institutional, cultural, and political worlds in one or more of program areas of focus.

• Demonstrated experience with academic program planning and management.

• Ability to provide academic and managerial leadership of the program and office.

• Ability to juggle complex interaction of academic, curricular, student service, and practical issues.

• Ability to develop, cultivate, and supervise internship experiences.

• Demonstrated excellent planning, organizational, negotiation, and analytical skills.

• Demonstrated ability to make sound business decisions using good business judgment and innovative and creative problem-solving.

• Demonstrated ability to manage financial, organizational, and staff resources.

• Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to cultivate professional and business partnerships.

• Excellent written and oral communication skills.

• Will work extended, variable hours, evenings or weekends

• Will reside and work in New York City.

• Will travel frequently to Stanford, for program development and consultation.
