Faculty Position in Civil and Environmental (Structural) Engineering

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Delaware (UD) invites applications for a teaching-focused faculty position in the field of structural engineering at the rank of assistant professor. The successful candidate will play critical roles in undergraduate education while having flexible opportunities to contribute to the academic mission of UD in a manner most suited with their experiences and interests.

Requirements for the position are:

• a doctoral degree in civil engineering, structural engineering, or engineering education. Candidates with degrees in engineering education must also have significant experience in teaching or in the practice of structural engineering.
• knowledge of modern engineering pedagogy.
• a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, in general and specifically in engineering education.
• professional engineering licensure or the ability to obtain licensure.

Other experiences that are beneficial, but not required, include professional work experience as a structural engineer, teaching experience in higher education and/or significant experience lecturing to professionals, and/or leadership experience.

Duties for the position include, but are not limited to:

• designing, delivering, and administering courses on topics such as structural analysis and design, engineering mechanics, and introductory and capstone project-based courses, primarily at the undergraduate level. Candidates should expect to deliver six or seven courses per academic year.
• mentoring and advising students through formal and informal activities.
• serving as an advisor for a student organization.
• having a leadership role in student recruitment activities in civil engineering aimed at prospective UD students.
• having a leadership role in accreditation activities and processes for the civil engineering degree program based on the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) criteria.
• participating in department, college, university, and/or professional service activities as needed and/or aligned with the candidate's interests.
• engaging with other faculty, particularly those who teach courses related to structural engineering, to deliver a cohesive and continually improving curriculum.
• if applicable based on the candidate’s negotiated workload, engaging in structural engineering and/or engineering education research.

The successful applicant will receive a continuing track (CT) faculty appointment. CT is UD’s full-time, continuing faculty line, similar to the tenure track. CT faculty enjoy contracts that increase in length over time and, like tenure-track faculty, receive full and generous benefits, including family-friendly benefits, as part of their compensation package. CT faculty with terminal degrees hold professorial rank and have a path to promotion up to full professor. All CT faculty earn sabbaticals, have opportunities to pursue research, participate in shared governance, and hold academic leadership positions. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UD is made up of 35 faculty members, approximately 400 undergraduate students, and 120 graduate students. The department offers three ABET-accredited bachelor’s degrees, in civil engineering, environmental engineering, and construction engineering and management as well as master's and Ph.D. degrees with various specialization options. Undergraduate programs are designed to produce graduates with a strong foundation in engineering fundamentals enabling them to lead a successful career in industry or government and/or obtain an advanced degree that contributes to engineering knowledge, the profession, and the community.
