Office of Student Conduct

The Office of Student Conduct supports the fostering and development of students at the University by promoting the ideals of academic honesty, personal integrity, and responsible citizenship among students at Carolina. This office supports the student-led Honor Systems efforts at promoting the Carolina Way. This is done by working to educate the campus on community expectations and responsibilities. When the need arises, the student-led Honor System adjudicates allegations of student misconduct.

 

Position Description

The Associate Director reports to the Director of the Office of Student Conduct/Judicial Programs Officer within Student Affairs and is a member of the Office of Student Conduct.  The Associate Director is responsible for supporting the daily functioning of the Undergraduate and Graduate/Professional Honor Systems and participating in education and programming initiatives designed to meet the needs of the student body and the larger University community.  This position requires the exercise of sound discretion in the advising and training of students, faculty, and staff; the implementation of complex University policies; and the recording and collection of data and information concerning students used for reporting purposes at the University, state, and federal levels.  This position encompasses a wide variety of counseling, educational, research and supervisory duties in the areas of program management, outreach activities, and staff/student training.  The position is charged with working as a part of a team that provides leadership and vision for Judicial Programs including the Honor System.

 

Responsibilities

  • Manage and monitor cases of alleged academic and nonacademic misconduct utilizing processes articulated in the Instrument of Student Judicial Governance and involving direct interaction with students that enhances the overall academic and learning experience outside the formal classroom setting.  Serve as staff liaison with the Department of Public Safety, Chapel Hill Police and other local law enforcement agencies regarding cases referred to the Honor System. 
  • Serve as primary intake officer for judicial reports and adviser to students regarding their rights and options in the adjudication process.  Counsel students regarding case outcomes, sanctions, and rights of appeal.  Coordinate scheduling of appeals and other post-hearing processes.  Oversee and coordinate sanctions or other case dispositions in conjunction with other University departments.
  • Evaluate and assess programs for effectiveness in relationship to designated learning outcomes.  Research, prepare and distribute judicial reports and case action notifications to appropriate University departments for use in assessing institutional policies and procedures. 
  • Maintain accurate and complete campus disciplinary records in accordance with applicable University policies and make regular updates to associated databases.  Coordinate timely placement and removal of transcript notations and service indicators related to judicial action.  Provide timely and accurate information to University officials charged with collecting data for state/federal reporting purposes.
  • In coordination with the Director of Student Conduct, develop and deliver ongoing training for students involved in presenting and deciding Honor System cases and for faculty & staff serving as appellate board members and chairs to ensure adherence to the policies that support the academic mission of the University.  
  • Develop and deliver orientation and educational programs for students, parents, faculty and staff regarding judicial affairs and policies related to the academic mission of the University, including the Campus Alcohol Policy and the Instrument of Student Judicial Governance.
  • Serve as a member of the Dean of Students emergency on-call rotating schedule; participate in the planning, management, and response to large-scale campus events (e.g., FallFest, Halloween, victory celebrations)

 

Educational Requirements

Masters degree in college student personnel, higher education administration, student affairs, or other relevant discipline is required.  Additional education or training in student counseling and/or judicial affairs preferred.

 

Experience

For full consideration, a minimum five years of progressively responsible work experience in student conduct or student affairs, or transferrable experience from a related field.  Experience with administrative disciplinary proceedings at a college or university is strongly preferred.

  • Superior interpersonal, analytical, and organizational skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to communicate with large and diverse audiences in addition to one-on-one encounters
  • Deep understanding of, and experience in, managing the various aspects associated with conflict resolution, including capacity to deliver effective due process in accordance with applicable policies
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive situations with diplomacy and sound judgment
  • Ability and willingness to promote collaborative work environment and build relationships with departmental staff and campus colleagues. 
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as needed, including being responsive to student inquiries during Honor Court proceedings
  • Familiarity with computers and software, and the ability to effectively integrate technology into service delivery, such as demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office and database systems.

 

Salary

Salary is commensurate with education and experience.
