Duties and Responsibilities

     Develop and provide leadership for a collaborative, interdepartmental research program on integrated sustainable cropping systems with emphasis on fruit and nut production.

     Develop an interdisciplinary program that integrates plant nutrition, soil fertility, soil biology, pest and weed management, and environmental concerns.

     Research areas may include: novel cropping systems, effect of composts and other organic soil amendments on soil fertility and quality, crop nutrition, varietal selection, pathogen suppression, and insect dynamics. Secure extramural grants from a variety of sources.

      Publish in refereed journals, extension bulletins, webpages, and other appropriate venues.

      Provide leadership in developing a state-wide extension program in sustainable farming systems for fruits and nuts.

      Work closely with county extension agents, farmer organizations, and other researchers and specialists within and across departments, in developing, adapting, and assisting in implementation of suitable sustainable farming technologies for a tropical environment.

      Teach TPSS 403 Tropical Fruit Production. Develop and teach a graduate level course in Integrated Fruit and Nut Management. These courses are to be taught primarily via the Internet every other year.

      Supervise undergraduate or graduate students.

 Provide service to the college, university, and community.

Minimum Qualifications

     Ph.D. in crop science, horticulture, agronomy, soil science, or other related agricultural field from an accredited university or college.

      Demonstrated ability as a teacher.

      Ability to conduct research and extension programs in rural and/ or orchard agro-environments.

      Experience in conducting research in fruits, nuts, and/or sustainable cropping systems.

      Experience in communicating using diverse information delivery systems, such as publications in peer-reviewed journals, web pages, electronic newsletters, and/ or videos.

      Experience in working harmoniously and effectively with diverse groups of people, such as students,

Desirable Qualifications

     Experience in conducting research on tropical fruits and nuts, tropical soils, orchard cropping systems, and/or marketing.

      Experience in development and implementation of an extension program.

      Experience in teaching, particularly in conducting on-line courses via the Internet.

      Demonstrated success in obtaining extramural grants.

     Experience developing and teaching distance learning courses.       

     Experience leading or participating in international, research, education or development projects.
