Position Summary:
This is a 12-month tenure track Assistant professor - Extension Specialist position located at the University of Idaho Kimberly Research and Extension Center. The successful candidate will be expected to initiate and conduct an innovative and comprehensive Extension (60%) and research (40%) program focused on enhancing forage production and management to fit the needs of the forage and livestock industry by increasing yield, quality, nutritional value, and utilization.

The successful candidate will develop and implement a nationally recognized educational program in forage crop production and utilization in annual and perennial forage systems. The program should also integrate environmentally sustainable practices, such as water quality protection, climate resilience, and soil health enhancement. Research and Extension activities should emphasize forage crops and their utilization as hay, haylage, and silage, and provide oversight of the forage variety evaluation program at the University of Idaho.

The successful candidate will develop a comprehensive Extension education program and develop a forage production education program accessible to students, county extension educators, and stakeholders. Program outputs should be evaluated yearly to demonstrate impact on the forage and livestock industry.

The successful candidate is expected to procure external funding to support the research and Extension program on forage crop systems for livestock. Additionally, the successful candidate will actively participate in recruitment, advising, and mentoring of graduate students.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in plant science, agronomy, crop science, agroecology, or related scientific discipline that demonstrates research competency in forage crop production and evidence of conducting research on successful forage production systems.
  • Experience planning and conducting field-based experiments in cropping and livestock farming systems and reporting results.
  • Experience creating and delivering presentations at scientific meetings and for stakeholder audiences.
  • Experience with verbal and written communication.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with western U.S. forage crop production systems.
  • Experience securing external grant funding.
  • Experience collaborating in multi-disciplinary team-based research and extension programs.
  • Experience managing staff.
  • Experience with forage crop management and sustainable production systems.
  • Experience with forage quality & nutritional parameters.
  • Experience with forage conservation, including but not limited to hay and silage production.
  • Experience writing extension publications and press articles for non-scientific audiences.
  • Experience working cooperatively and effectively with colleagues and clientele.


Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
  • Ability to work outdoors in cold, temperate, or hot weather; able to work in wet or dry weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift and/or otherwise move at least 50 pounds.
  • Ability to walk distances to inspect and work in fields and lab settings.
