Job Description: 

Provides leadership, vision, and strategic planning for the School of Sustainabilitys (SOS) education, training, and capacity-building initiatives; represents the Global Institute of Sustainability (GIOS) to corporations, government employers, non-profits, and businesses with the objective of developing and delivering education, training, and capacity-building to organizations that support the GIOS and SOS strategic plan and mission. This position will report to the Dean.

 

Essential Duties:

Develops and implements strategic plans to promote and market to external organizations education, training, and capacity building opportunities in sustainability.

 

Plans, directs, and reviews the activities and operations of the GIOS programs in the School to ensure achievement of established goals.

 

Develops objectives and activities based on the Schools mission and goals; identifies and presents strategies to address deficiencies or opportunities for achieving or exceeding objectives.  

 

Assists with the development of long- and short-range goals ensuring strategies have aligned with implementation plans.

 

Develops and conducts needs assessments targeting organizations and companies to build awareness, market, recruit and convert business opportunities into education, training, and capacity-building programs for working professionals.

 

Initiates and develops proposals with interdisciplinary teams to incorporate education, training, and capacity building into new and ongoing faculty research endeavors. 

 

Develops and presents business plans to identify cost for the delivery of programs; directs and evaluates implementation for comparison to anticipated revenue goals. 

 

Directs and develops lecture series, seminars, special events, on-going visits and relationships with key organizations and business executives to continue and enhance awareness of program benefits.  

 

Develops and maintains rapport and credibility with the faculty to engage them in training and professional development efforts.

 

Directs program staff and manages its budget including supervising, overseeing and participating in the hiring, training and evaluation of staff.

 

Leads client relationship development and management as needed, including, but not limited to: writes proposals, performs needs assessments, designs education, training, and capacity-building programs, and serves as the main liaison between the client and GIOS. 

 

Works collaboratively and in conjunction with other departments to ensure coordination of efforts in contacting and working with external clients. 

 

Represents the Dean and GIOS on university committees and corporate advisory boards.

 

Networks with similar university-based programs to obtain ideas and to assist in quality measurements.

 

Minimum Qualifications: 

Masters degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment, and eight (8) years of related administrative experience which includes five (5) years of supervisory experience; OR, any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.

 

Desired Qualifications: 

Evidence of a Masters degree in Sustainability or Environmental Sciences/Studies.  Demonstrated knowledge of: principles, concepts, and practices of sustainability; principles, practices, methods and concepts of marketing, sales, and management; strategic planning principles and practices; academic organizations; the business communitys educational needs; effective supervisory practices and techniques.  Experience in:  participatory management; the management of staff and budgets; working effectively with a wide range of professional individuals and varied work situations; negotiations and conflict resolution; strategic planning and organizational management; marketing strategies and in using sales techniques; planning, analyzing, and coordinating activities and establishing priorities; skill in program design and development; working in an environment subject to changing priorities with potentially conflicting deadlines;  liaising between academic and other organizations. Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with: educational programs for working professionals; adult education techniques; marketing concepts.  

 

Working Environment: 

Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse (75%); frequently required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work (25%)

 

Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds (35%)

 

Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts

 

Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions

 

Frequent travel, both in state and out of state, involving operation of a motor vehicle
