Job Description Summary
Analytics at Wharton (AAW) unites The Wharton School's trail-blazing teaching, research, and industry engagement initiatives that use data to improve decision-making and generate actionable insights. AAW brings together seven programs at the School and supports new ideas and opportunities to expand the impact of big data analytics on research, curriculum, and industry and alumni engagement.
The Director of Data Computing and Research Support will work with AAW leadership to develop and advance the goals of Analytics at Wharton's research agenda and student experiential learning programs. The Director is responsible for the strategic planning and overall management of complex research projects, conducted in partnership with faculty, industry partners, students, government agencies, non-profits, and the larger academic community. In addition, the Director supervises a team of 5+ staff who provide data computing and research support services to all research projects under the AAW pillar.
Job Description
Job Responsibilities
- Develop and execute the strategic goals of Analytics at
Wharton's research agenda and student experiential learning
programs to advance analytics and AI initiatives at The Wharton
School.
- Collaborate with the Vice Dean, AAW Faculty Directors, AAW
staff, and external partners to scope research and student
experiential learning projects.
- Lead a portfolio of 20+ diverse research projects from concept
to completion. This includes: developing proposals, scoping
projects, assigning projects, and delegating tasks to the data
team. In addition, the Director will provide support and guidance
to projects as needed to ensure deliverables are met.
- Manage the technical infrastructure and data management of
research and experiential learning projects including working with
external partners and the AAW data and research team to extract
datasets, coordinate preliminary analysis of datasets, and develop
robust database environments that support the strategic goals of
research projects.
- Develop, implement, and manage shared data computing and
research support infrastructure. Streamline data processes and
expand and enhance data storage, researcher and student
applications, and technical documentation for AAW and its
affiliated centers and labs. Collaborate with Wharton Computing and
other Penn groups to ensure technology operations are cutting-edge
and following Wharton computing standards.
- Supervise the research team, which includes 5-7 full-time staff
and 10+ undergraduate and graduate research assistants, with plans
for future expansion as needed. Provide supervision and feedback to
staff and create opportunities for training and professional
development for the team. Indirect supervision of Post-Docs,
Pre-Docs, PhD students and affiliated scholars on a per-project
basis as needed.
- Collaborate with AAW staff on student events and educational
workshops. Provide expertise, feedback, and guidance on content for
technical workshops, data competitions, and other student
projects.
- Collaborate with the AAW marketing and communications team to
promote student events and experiential learning programs and to
create digestible research content for external
audiences.
Qualifications
- Master's degree with 1-2 years of experience managing research
projects in a higher education setting required. 5-7 years overall
experience preferred.
- Experience managing database projects using SQL and experience
with Hadoop, Tableau, R and Python is required.
- Experience managing a research team, including software
developers, data scientists, data analysts and student workers is
required.
- Experience building relationships with a wide range of internal
and external constituents in a large, complex
organization
- Excellent interpersonal communication and project management
skills to foster collaboration and teamwork among researchers,
corporations, local governments, and university
departments.
- Strong organizational skills and an ability to manage multiple
complex tasks with diverse audiences and varying deadlines is
essential.
The anticipated pay range is $125,000 - $145,000. Final Salary is based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the requirements of the position, as well as internal and market factors and grade profile.
