Jackson State University invites applications for Chair of the Department of Music.

 

JOB SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, the Department of Music Chair represents the Department to the College, other administrators, in the community, and throughout the state of Mississippi. In collaboration with faculty and staff the Chair leads the department in all aspects of program and curricular development, scholarly/creative activity, advocacy, and service. The Chair schedules and staffs all classes, supervises departmental employees, administers performance evaluations, and recommends faculty for promotion and tenure as outlined by the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL). The Chair develops and manages departmental budgets, oversees facilities and equipment, and responds to concerns referred by faculty, students, University officials and outside constituents. The Chair is will be required to maintain appropriate teaching responsibilities and engaging in creative scholarship. The successful candidate will join a rapidly growing and ethnically diverse department.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Required: This is a full-time, 12 month position. Ideally this successful candidate will take office July 1, 2014, requires a terminal degree or equivalency in music from a regionally accredited college or university and a record of excellence in teaching and artistic or scholarly activity. Demonstrable administrative experience including a history of resource management, recruiting, promotion of university music programs, program development, and community outreach is expected. The successful candidate must possess the qualifications for appointment as an associate or full professor with tenure.

Preferred Qualifications: Preference will be given to candidates with experience at the level of chair or higher and to a candidate who has been tenured with an excellent publication and/or performance record, ongoing research agenda, and service at the collegiate level; experience and facility with curriculum development; experience and facility with arts performance and production; integrating high impact, engaged pedagogies and new technologies into the curriculum; strategic planning; and student learning outcomes assessment; have the ability to work collaboratively and provide a clear vision and leadership; and cultivate development opportunities to identify funding resources for new and existing programs. Experience with NASM accreditation standards and procedure is also preferred.

 

 

DEPARTMENT:

The JSU Department of Music offers the Bachelor of Music degrees in Music Education, Performance, and Music Technology. Additionally, the Master of Music Education degree is offered.  The JSU School of Fine and Performing Arts is within the College of Liberal Arts.
