Position Summary:
The University of Idaho, College of Agricultural & Life Sciences, Plant Sciences department, is seeking a tenure-track Research Faculty, Assistant Professor, to develop an extramurally funded, nationally and internationally recognized research program to address sustainable production in controlled environment systems. This candidate is expected to work independently and collaboratively with other faculty members in research and to engage industry as appropriate as partners and in outreach. Specific areas of research may include plant nutrition and disease, irrigation systems, hydroponics, vertical farming, and organic production within controlled environments. Potential collaborations include Plant Sciences faculty on campus and at Research & Extension Centers and Soil and Water Systems faculty that have an emphasis on precision agriculture and the engineering aspects of controlled environment production. The successful candidate is expected to publish in high quality refereed journals, garner nationally competitive grants funded to support the research, be active in regional and national disciplinary societies in presentation of research, and successfully mentor graduate student thesis and postdoctoral research. The candidate will develop and teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels in controlled environment production, teaching courses to support both the horticulture and urban agriculture program in the Department of Plant Sciences and the sustainable food systems program in the Department of Soil and Water Systems. Participation in undergraduate advising and graduate student thesis mentoring is expected. The candidate is expected to contribute to the department, college, and university with appropriate involvement in service.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • A Ph.D. in plant sciences, botany, horticulture, or closely related scientific discipline
  • Experience conducting research and reporting research results.
  • Experience and training in fundamental and applied research of fruit, floral or vegetable crop production in controlled environments.
  • Experience with formal classroom teaching or Extension/outreach teaching.
  • Experience adapting research materials into effective oral and written presentations.
  • Experience publishing high impact applied research in scientific journals and Extension/outreach publications.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Evidence of ability to conduct research independently and collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams.
  • Experience as a postdoctoral researcher in an area related to controlled environment agriculture.
  • Track record of successful grant awards in support of research program.
  • Evidence of effective teaching at the college or university level.
  • Experience with plant physiology research.


Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
  • May lift, carry and/or otherwise move items weighing up to 20 pounds on an intermittent basis.
  • Ability to conduct field research trials.
  • Ability to work in a greenhouse environment.
