Position Summary:  The Director reports to the Associate Vice President for Research and provides leadership for and oversight of the University’s research and sponsored project activities, including both the pre-award and post-award operations.  The Director is responsible for the administration and fiscal and programmatic compliance with sponsor and institutional policies, procedures, and regulatory guidance.  The Director will facilitate the advancement of research and sponsored project activities within the University through a variety of efforts. 

Primary responsibilities of the position include (but are not limited to): supervision of and training/cross-training all SRA staff; overseeing and directing all aspects of pre- and post-award operations (i.e., review, approval and submission of proposals; negotiation and acceptance of awards and post-award modifications; monitoring of sub-recipients; review for reasonableness and accuracy budgets and institutional commitments; invoicing, collections, financial reporting; OMB A-133 audit process; F&A proposal preparation and negotiation; effort reporting); promoting SRA as a customer-oriented department; increasing the collegiality between SRA and the campus community; streamlining and/or reducing internal administrative burdens; providing training and educational opportunities for faculty, staff and students; overseeing institutional compliance with federal, state, sponsor and institutional policies;  providing expertise and guidance to academic and administrative senior management in all areas of sponsored research administration; oversight responsibility for ensuring the development and operation of appropriate management information systems and databases that are adequate for the administration of the University’s research and sponsored project activities; and preparation of monthly, quarterly, annual and ad hoc reports of research and sponsored project activities.

Florida State University is classified as a very high research activity, doctorate-granting institution with a student population approaching 42,000 and research expenditures over $250 million.  In recent years, the University has made considerable investments in research infrastructure in the sciences and engineering disciplines.  The University is located in Tallahassee, the capital of Florida, where residents have access to a broad range of cultural amenities afforded by the presence of three institutions of higher learning.  The region boasts an abundance of springs, lakes and rivers as well as pristine beaches on the Gulf of Mexico.


Education Experience: Master’s degree and six years experiences related to administrative services or a Bachelor’s degree and 8 years related experience.


Preferred: Demonstrated experience in research and grants administration with progressively increasing responsibilities.  A broad understanding of research administration organizational structures, proposal submission, post-award administration, contract negotiation, fund accounting, financial reporting and regulatory compliance.
