Job Description

The Research Coordinator will work with Principal Investigators to lead and manage NAU's 3D Hazardous Fuels and Wildfire Effects Mapping and Modeling Project. This includes overseeing project activities from planning to implementation, coordinating data collection and analysis, facilitating partnerships across academic, government, and community organizations, and leveraging advanced technologies like terrestrial lidar, GIS, and cloud computing for research and analysis. The position demands a strong foundation in forest management practices, technical proficiency in remote sensing and data management tools, statistical analysis, and exceptional skills in communication, collaboration, and mentorship to support project goals and engage diverse stakeholders. The coordinator will also play a crucial role in disseminating research findings, preparing reports and publications, and organizing outreach activities to promote project outcomes. The position will provide coordination between Northern Arizona University's Ecological Restoration Institute, School of Forestry, Southwest Fire Science Consortium, University of Arizona's Department of Geoscience, Arizona Geological Survey, the national cyberinfrastructure center or CyVerse and U.S. Geological Survey Southwest Biological Science Center and Land Change Science Program personnel and staff.

Project Management and Partner Collaboration - 40%
  • Coordinate project activities, including planning, implementation, and monitoring of research related to WUI fire-fuel mitigation strategies.
  • Manage data collection, analysis, archiving, and submission to national IntELiMon (Interagency Ecosystem LiDAR Monitoring) and partner agency systems.
  • Monitor the progress of research activities; develop and maintains records of research activities, and prepare periodic and ad hoc reports, primarily for internal audiences.
  • Facilitate collaboration among project partners, including academic institutions, government agencies, and community organizations.

Research Outputs and Engagement Activities - 25%
  • Manage and coordinate data sharing and dissemination of various research findings to both scientific and general audiences.
  • Assist in the preparation of reports, grant proposals, and publications related to the project.
  • Organize meetings, workshops, and outreach activities to engage stakeholders and disseminate project results.

Technology application and Analyses - 20%


  • Utilize advanced technologies like terrestrial lidar to collect local fuels data and manage large datasets.
  • Working with next-generation fire behavior models and simulations to assess treatment effects, scenario planning and treatment prioritization.
  • Apply Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing technologies to produce vegetation and fuels maps, along with assessing potential wildfire behavior and flood risks.
  • Employ CyVerse's cloud computing, high-performance computing, and data sharing capabilities to support the project's computational needs.

Mentoring and Support - 10%
  • Mentor and foster a supportive community among graduate students to achieve overall project goals, outcomes, and promote cohesion.
  • Share expertise in research methodologies, data analysis software, and/or laboratory techniques; teaching practical skills, offering advice on project design, and providing feedback on research proposals or drafts.

Other - 5%
  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in forestry, environmental science, natural resource management, or a related field.
  • 2 to 4 years of research support experience.
  • A combination of related education, experience and training may be used as an equivalent to the above Minimum Requirements.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in forestry, environmental science, natural resource management, or a related field.
  • Experience in research coordination or project management, preferably in fire or forest ecology and/or fuel management, or related areas.
  • Familiarity with advanced technologies such as terrestrial lidar, GIS, remote sensing, cloud computing platforms and programming language like R and/or Python.


Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Knowledge
  • Intermediate knowledge of principles and techniques related to forestry, remote sensing and GIS, spatial analyses, field ecology, and science communication.
  • Intermediate knowledge of research methods, protocols, data collection, and analysis related to forestry, fuels management, and statistical modeling.
  • Knowledge of wildland fire and forest management practices and policies, especially related to hazardous fuel mitigation and forest restoration.
  • Knowledge of proper safety and compliance practices related to conducting field research.

Skills
  • Intermediate technical understanding and proficiency related to conducting research in field ecology, forestry, vegetation and fuels management, and application of statistical models.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and collaborative skills to work effectively with a diverse team of researchers, practitioners, and community stakeholders.

  • Proficiency in disseminating research findings to both scientific and general audiences, and in preparing reports, grant proposals, and publications.

Background Information

Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. Salary

Anticipated salary range is $47,634 - $59,542. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

FLSA Status

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.

Benefits

This is a Classified Staff (CLS) position.
