Tenure-Track or Clinical Assistant Professor in Social Science/Cultural Studies

The Department of Curriculum& instruction (C&I), College of Education, University of Idaho (UI) seeks passionate and well-qualified applicants for a full-time, 9-month Tenure-Track or Clinical Assistant Professor in Social Science/Cultural Studies Education position, beginning August 2014. The successful candidate will be involved in teaching, research, creating partnerships with K-12 educators and studying teacher education and preservice teachers, This position is based at the UI Moscow campus, where the rolling hills of the Palouse meet the mountains for which Idaho is known, Recreational and cultural opportunities abound in the college towns of Moscow and seven miles east of us in Pullman, Washington, home of Washington State University.

Position Description

Teaching: Teach undergraduate courses in Social Science methods for elementary, middle school, and high school preservice teacher candidates, as well as diversity courses in the Teacher Preparation and Advanced Programs in the Curriculum and Instruction (C&l) department. C&I offers programs state-wide; faculty may teach classes via distance learning and/or at UI resident instructional centers and/or in partner schools and/or on the main campus in Moscow. The position requires both face-to-face and online or hybrid teaching skills and requires advising of undergraduate and graduate students to program completion. Summer teaching is available and encouraged.

Scholarship: Tenure-Track position scholarship expectations - Develop and maintain an active research agenda consistent with preparation, program direction, and a doctoral-extensive research institution; includes collaboration with colleagues, dissemination of research, seeking external funding, and mentoring masters and doctoral students.

Clinical position scholarship expectations - Teacher preparation program evaluation, teacher candidate learning, best practices in social science education, Native American education.

Outreach & Service: Develop and maintain collaborative partnerships with professionals in schools, especially those with indigenous student populations, and UI academic departments; provide professional development opportunities for preservice and inservice teachers; assist state and regional policy makers; serve on college and department committees; and advise undergraduate students. The successful candidate will provide effective instruction and help coordinate preservice teacher practicum activities for teacher education initiatives in the Moscow area and with partner schools in Lapwai and surrounding areas.

Required Qualifications:

• An earned master's degree by August 2014 in one of the social science fields, cultural studies, or in social science education or a related field

• Interest and/or experience in teaching American Indian/Native American students,

• Evidence of excellent teaching skills.

• Demonstrated ability to utilize technology in communications, assessment, teaching, and learning .

• Knowledge of technology and its role in education .

• Experience in providing professional development to preservice and/or inservice teachers.

• Experience with internal and external collaborative partnerships.

• A minimum of three years of successful contracted K-12 teaching experience that includes social science teaching

Preferred Qualifications:

• An earned doctorate by August 2014 in Social Sciences Education or related field.
• Extensive experience teaching K-12 students.
• Experience designing curriculum and instruction informed by cultural proficiency and inclusive pedagogies.
• Interest in development of STEM-related social science education.
• Deep knowledge of indigenous student populations/cultures, especially those of the Northwest.

Salary: Salary and rank are competitive and depend upon qualifications and experience.
