Job Description: The Large Animal Surgery Department within the University of Florida Veterinary Hospitals is recruiting for a Veterinary Technician 1. 1. This position will be assisting with routine surgery for all patients in the Large Animal Hospital and working in sterile supply requiring the incumbent to stand for long periods of time. 2. This position intermittently with require the physical ability and stamina to jog, flex horselimbs and lunge horses during physical exams. 3. This is a physically demanding position that requires excellent horse handling skills and experience. 4. The Large Animal Surgery Tech must have working knowledge of surgical instruments, working knowledge of medical terminology, veterinary anatomy and physiology, sterile technique and de-contamination procedures, as well as the ability to disassemble and assemble various types of surgical instruments and equipment. 5. This position requires a post offer health assessment.
Minimum Requirements: Graduation from an accredited American Veterinary Medical Association program for veterinary technology and\/or met requirements for certification in the state of Florida; or a high school diploma and two years of veterinary work experience.
Preferred Qualifications 1. Experience in the restraint and handling of horses and understand veterinary medical terminology in order to carry out, direct and instruct senior veterinary students, veterinary care technicians and volunteer help in the care and treatment of patients in the University of Florida, Large Animal Hospital. 2. Knowledge of surgical instruments, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, sterile technique and decontamination procedures. 3. Basic computing skills in word processing and spread sheets are required. Basic computing skills including the ability to successfully master the hospital information system as itused in patient care and processing. 4. Must possess the ability to maintain effective working relationships with clinicians, coworkers, students and clients. 5. May provide periodic instructions and review of student workers, and OPS technicians in the absence of a professional staff member or higher ranking technician. 6. Graduation from an accredited American Veterinary Medical Association program for veterinary technology and\\:or meet requirements for certification in the state of Florida; or a high school diploma and four years of veterinary work experience. 7. A minimum of two years practical experience in an academic hospital environment or four years of appropriate education and practical experience in a private practice 8. Documented completion of 20 hours continuing education within the last two years. Cross training may substitute for continuing education. Successful completion of basic Skills Mastery List for this level technician within six months of hire date. Verification of proficiency will be required. 9. Certification as a Veterinary Technician.
