POSITION: Whitworth University invites applications for the position of Dean of Spiritual Life/Campus Pastor; appointment anticipated to begin on July 1, 2014.The Dean of Spiritual Life/Campus Pastor provides leadership for campus ministry including worship and evangelism, pastoral care, and service and community building. The dean reports to the Vice President for Student Life, serves on the President's Cabinet, and has administrative faculty status.

  2. A desire to pursue a life of humility, holiness and love that reflects the humility, holiness and love of God in Christ.
  3. A desire to serve the Whitworth community with energy, intelligence, imagination and love.
  4. A desire to embrace Whitworths identity as a Reformed, evangelical and ecumenical university.



1. Leadership, Administration and Teaching

a)      Oversee campus ministry.

b)      Supervise staff as they lead campus ministry programs.

c)      Interview finalists for faculty positions and for key staff positions.

d)      Represent Whitworth to external constituencies.

e)      Participate in board of trustees meetings and consult with trustees on matters related to the universitys mission.

f)       Teach up to one course a year. 

g)      Oversee the campus ministry department budget.

h)      Serve on the Whitworth Institute of Ministry Planning Committee.

i)        Serve as a member of the Whitworth Student Life Directors team.

j)        Collaborate with the Whitworth Office of Church Engagement on initiatives that engage students with church internships and other ministry opportunities. 


2. Worship and Evangelism

a)      Serve as a key theological voice on campus.

b)      Witness to Christ by actively seeking relationships with people across campus.

c)      Collaborate with the campus ministry staff to design and lead worship services.

d)      Preach regularly in weekly chapel services and encourage participation in worship by students, faculty and staff.

e)      Discern and develop ministries that attract a diverse range of students.

f)       Encourage each student, faculty member and staff member to participate regularly in a local church.


3. Pastoral Care

a)      Provide pastoral care and counseling to the Whitworth community.

b)      Nurture a life of disciplined prayer for Whitworth, the church and the world.

c)      Collaborate with student life directors in response to emergencies and crises.

d)      Creatively help people understand themselves in the light of Scripture and the person of Jesus Christ.

4. Service and Community Building

a)      Encourage an atmosphere of thoughtful and charitable inquiry and disagreement about issues of faith, while being a welcoming presence on campus.

b)      Model a life of service, and actively connect students to local and global service opportunities.

c)      Plan and lead special campus worship services such as baccalaureate and memorial services, and participate in campus ceremonies and events such as Whitworth Family Weekend and fall and Spring Convocations.



  • A personal commitment to the Christian faith and to the integration of faith and learning. 
  • A master of divinity degree and strong intellectual and educational interests required.  A Ph.D. is desirable.
  • Experience in ministering to young adults.
  • Experience in administration and teaching.
  • An understanding of university student development and a commitment to establishing positive relationships with students.
  • A demonstrated awareness of and commitment to addressing effectively the unique needs and concerns of persons from a variety of diverse backgrounds, including those from under-represented racial/ethnic populations, persons with different gender and religious identities, and those with physical or cognitive disabilities.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Understanding of and commitment to Whitworths Reformed, evangelical and ecumenical identities.
  • Active involvement in the church; ordained status preferred.
  • A commitment to the educational mission of Whitworth University as a Christian liberal arts university affiliated with the Presbyterian church.
