The University of Chicago seeks a new Dean of the Harris School of Public Policy Studies to build on traditional and current strengths of the School, and create new levels of eminence in scholarly work, in educational programs for the training of skilled leaders in public policy, and in the School's engagement with policy-makers and the public.

The Harris School has a tradition of excellence in scholarship and training of students in a quantitative data-driven approach to public policy issues. It is embedded in one of the world's foremost universities, enabling joint appointments of leading scholars from many areas across the University, and the opportunity to leverage a wide range of exciting University initiatives.

The University leadership expects a new Dean to enhance the visibility, impact, and nature of the Harris School, to engage faculty within the School and across the University in new and distinctive initiatives, to expand its financial and human resources and to broaden the influence of Harris scholars and alumni in critical policymaking debates.

In the last decade the University has made substantial additional investments to bolster its long tradition of academic eminence in social science, applied social science, and policy related areas. The Harris School fits readily into some of the University's largest commitments. Senior University leaders are explicitly committed to success at Harris. They are ready to enable investments in faculty, programs, students and facilities in order to see the School grow in capacity and reputation. A new Dean will have a rare opportunity to make Harris a pre-eminent school of public policy, aimed directly at some of the world's most pressing issues.

The ideal candidate will bring a track record of innovative and collaborative leadership in higher education. Prior experience in public service or other similarly complex, mission-driven enterprises will enhance a candidate's appeal. The University is interested in candidates who have achieved academic distinction and have a record of success in the world of policymaking. They should bring high energy, a passion for exemplary research, an interest in innovative pedagogy, and a strategic understanding of how to sway the public policy process.
