Position Title: Director of Startup Services, Drexel Ventures


Job Overview:

Drexel Ventures is a subsidiary enterprise that amplifies Drexel Universitys capacity for translational research, discovery and innovation. Drexel Ventures helps faculty and students commercialize their inventions and launch new businesses around them. It drives large-scale innovation at the University and in the region, and is the front door for the private sector to connect with Drexels core competencies and talented faculty.

Through Drexel Ventures, the University is increasing corporate and federal R&D investment, accelerating the commercialization of Drexel-developed technologies and growing the number of new businesses based on Drexel innovations. Drexel Ventures coordinates and leverages existing Drexel entrepreneurship and innovation programs including the Coulter Foundation Translational Research Partnership, the Close School of Entrepreneurship, the Baiada Institute for Entrepreneurship and the ExCITe Center.


The Director of Startup Services will report to the Managing Director, Drexel Ventures



-  Minimum of a Bachelor's degree, Master's preferred -  At least 10 years of experience in a project and team management role -  Demonstrated success developing and evaluating program models, and selecting and successfully operationalizing innovative programs -  Excellent communication and coalition building skills with an ability to balance, negotiate, and work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders; high level of knowledge and understanding, especially as it relates to program replication, connecting programs to funding, creatively generating other resources, and building strategic partnerships -  Grant writing experience -  Strong project management skills managing complex, multifaceted projects resulting in measurable successes and program growth -  Strength in recruiting, managing, developing, coaching, and retaining individuals and teams, empowering them to elevate their span-of-control and performance -  Demonstrated results in managing through complex systems and proved experience negotiating win-win agreements -  Excellent verbal and written communication skills and exceptional attention to details


Essential Functions:

-  Design and deliver programs to instruct, encourage and support innovation and entrepreneurial activities of University faculty, doctoral students, post-doctoral students (Academic Innovators) and alumni -  Provide business consulting services to Academic Innovators to meet their entrepreneurial and start-up needs -  Collaborate with the Close School of Entrepreneurship to develop and deliver curricular material to Academic Innovators -  Monitor and maximize service delivery to Drexel Academic Innovators to meet identified goals and strategies -  Manage the Innovation Fund Program for proof-of-concept awards and seed investments -  Work closely with the Technology Transfer Team to identify Intellectual Property created by Academic Innovators for possible patenting and licensure -  Work closely with the management team of the 3401 Innovation Center to support Drexel Ventures start-up and related activities -  Work closely with the Managing Director of Drexel Ventures to deliver Drexel Ventures programs to accomplish the identified goals and strategies -  Advocate Drexel Ventures' mission and the needs of its clients within Philadelphia's entrepreneurial ecosystem -  Connect Academic Innovators and management of Drexel spinoffs to people and resources critical to their success -  Recruit and manage volunteer mentors and advisors for start-ups
