Job Description:
Syracuse University invites applications for the Director of the Lender Center for Social Justice. The Lender Center for Social Justice is a globally engaged, multidisciplinary center posed to be a national hub for social justice leadership in research, scholarship, and action. We seek a nationally recognized scholar in social justice research, teaching, and action to lead the center's charge to foster proactive, innovative and interdisciplinary approaches to issues related to justice, equity, and inclusion. The next director will provide visionary leadership for individuals and institutions from across campus, the community and nation to propose and develop innovative ways of engaging contemporary social issues and to promote the pursuit of social justice, human rights, and anti-discrimination.

Established in 2017 with a generous gift from Helaine and Marvin Lender and administered by the Office of the Associate Provost for Strategic Initiatives in Academic Affairs, the Lender Center for Social Justice supports initiatives that promote innovative and multidisciplinary research of contemporary social problems while providing proactive and concrete approaches and solutions. These initiatives include an innovative faculty and student fellowship program, an annual symposium, and a conversation series encouraging dialogue among researchers, practitioners, activists, and thought leaders. Most recently, the Lender Center received a three-year, $2.7 million dollar grant from the MetLife Foundation to support research initiatives aimed at addressing the racial wealth gap. The grant supports postdoctoral fellowships, intramural grants, and research symposia. The director will provide strategic and visionary leadership for this grant initiative working with the Office of Research and the Advancement Team.

In addition, this recruitment is part of an ambitious Invest Syracuse Cluster Hire Initiative in the broad area of social differences and social justice. As an integral part of this investment, Syracuse University will recruit multiple candidates for faculty positions for the research cluster. Faculty hired into these positions will build on our existing strengths in the focus area and will participate in an effort that spans multiple departments in the School of Education, the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, the Martin J. Whitman School of Management, the College of Arts and Sciences, and others. Further information on the campus-wide hiring initiative can be found at https://www.syracuse.edu/academics/research/clusters/.

Qualifications:
  • The successful candidate will qualify for an appointment with tenure at Syracuse University at the rank of full professor and must demonstrate expertise in social justice and equity driven leadership.

Job Specific Qualifications:
  • The next leader will have a stellar record of engaged scholarship and creative work related to social justice, equity, and inclusion and extensive experience leading interdisciplinary and collaborative teams and processes within and across academia, community and advocacy contexts.
  • A record of extramural grant funding from a range of organizations, foundations and other sources is desired.

Responsibilities:
  • Facilitate opportunities for engaged scholarship and teaching that promotes innovative and multidisciplinary research of contemporary social problems with emphasis on actionable approaches and solutions, including an interdisciplinary faculty and student-led fellowship program, research symposia, and a conversation series featuring a range of stakeholders.
  • Directly supervise administrative team consisting of a grant program manager and administrative assistant. Work closely with Office of Research and Office of Advancement to oversee the administration of grant funded initiatives.
  • Provide leadership to and support faculty hires across the Syracuse campus in the areas of social differences and social justice.
  • Recruit and support faculty, postdoctoral, and student fellows, community stakeholders and University units to promote equity-driven and engaged scholarship and teaching.
  • Work with faculty, staff, students, and community members across academic and administrative units and in the broader Syracuse University community.
  • Increase visibility and public impact of social justice research, scholarship, and teaching through programming, publications, and advocacy.
  • Manage an advisory group of thought leaders from the university and campus community and encourage engagement from Lender Center affiliated faculty.
  • Seek and facilitate partnerships between Syracuse faculty and stakeholders from industry, government, community, and advocacy groups, as well as between Syracuse faculty and scholars at other universities.
