The Employee Relations/Affirmative Action Officer (ER/AAO) supports the overall mission of the University by providing leadership, vision, and strategic direction to the University's efforts to maintain equitable treatment of all employees in all employment decisions. Through the development and implementation of the University's Affirmative Action plan, s/he will assist every member of the University community in taking responsibility for providing a welcoming and supportive community for students, faculty and staff, regardless of personal experiences and world views that arise from differences of race, culture, religion, profession, income, or age. The ER/AAO keeps the equitable treatment of employees at the forefront of decision-making; provides leadership in the implementation of equitable hiring practices, promotions, transfers, disciplinary actions, and terminations; and coordinates with all other areas of the University to enhance the overall employment environment. Success will be measured based on improvements in campus climate as well as recruitment and retention of a diverse staff.

Required Education/Experience/Skills (Minimum Qualifications)
Master's degree required in social sciences, human resources, public policy, or other related field. A minimum of 5 years experience in employee relations.

Extensive experience in the field of diversity and equity, and demonstrated ability to mobilize that expertise into highly effective, practical applications.

Exceptional communication skills in understanding a wide variety of constituent groups for building consensus and support for innovative solutions.

Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply applicable laws, statutes, university regulations, and established protocol to existing and proposed operational changes. Knowledge of Affirmative Action, ADA, federal and state employment laws, and current employee relations and affirmative action trends and practices.

Proven results in generating an inclusive, diverse environment.

Experience in conflict resolution, performance management, mediation/facilitation, and problem solving.

Experience in conducting work related investigations.

Preferred education/experience/skills:
Prefer 7+ years of Employee Relations or related Human Resources experience, including knowledge of employment law.

Prefer experience in Affirmative Action Administration.

Prefer PHR/SPHR.

Prefer strong computer skills in MS Office Suite including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Project.

Essential skills for the successful candidate include strong written and verbal communication skills, project management skills, the ability to interact effectively with a wide variety of employee populations, and the ability to work independently and as a member of a team.

Knowledge, skills and abilities required:
• Knowledge of effective employee relations and the principles, practices, and procedures of Human Resources Management.
• Ability to objectively coach employees and managers through complex, difficult, and emotional issues, working effectively with a broad range of constituencies in a diverse community.
• Demonstrated ability to manage formal and informal dispute resolution processes and procedures.
• Ability to make recommendations to effectively resolve problems or issues, using strong critical thinking skills, independent judgment and discretion. Ability to apply federal and state guidelines, regulations and laws appropriately and in a manner that is consistent with university policies and procedures.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Knowledge of principles and practices of Human Resources administration including workforce diversity, classification and compensation, recruitment, benefit plans, retirement plans, workers' compensation law, Family and Medical Leave Act, Americans with Disabilities Act, and Fair Labor Standards Act.
• Knowledge of current and emerging trends in public sector employee and labor relations policies and practices, and knowledge of federal and state employment and labor laws, regulations, procedures, and standards.
• Ability to examine and develop or revise operations and procedures, draft policies, and develop and implement new strategies and procedures.
• Ability to work with diverse cultures in a collegial and collaborative manner.
• Ability to multitask and prioritize workload effectively; understand and demonstrate a sense of urgency to resolve problematic situations.
• Ability to handle confidential and politically sensitive matters in a professional and discreet manner.
• Ability to demonstrate good judgment, empathy, and compassion appropriate for the situation.
• Ability to form effective working relationships with people at all levels of the institution.
• Ability to manage and defuse stressful and complex situations and to resolve conflicts.
