Assistant Professor, Criminal Justice (Branch Campus)


The Department of Criminal Justice at the State University of New York, College at Plattsburgh invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor in Criminal Justice at our Campus in Queensbury, NY, starting August 2014. The successful candidate will be committed to excellence in teaching, research, and service in an institution dedicated primarily to undergraduate education. He or she will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of and sensitivity to diversity and gender issues, as SUNY Plattsburgh is committed to ensuring that its graduates are educated to succeed in an increasingly complex, multicultural, and interdependent world.

The branch campus in Queensbury offers courses in the junior and senior years at the State University of New York, College at Plattsburgh (main campus) bachelors degree in criminal justice. Students may complete their degree at the branch campus.


Responsibilities include:
Teaching a variety of courses in the major each semester; helping to coordinate the criminal justice major at the branch campus; advising and mentoring students; and research. Some teaching areas will be determined by the departments needs and the successful candidates areas of expertise. Candidate should also demonstrate an understanding of and sensitivity to diversity and gender issues. Therefore, we value faculty who can bring expertise in those areas.   Candidates may be asked to teach courses in a distance learning format.


Required Qualifications:
Ph.D. in sociology, criminal justice or criminology is required. ABDs will be considered for appointment at a lesser (qualified) rank and salary, conditioned upon proof that the applicants defense of his/her dissertation is scheduled prior to the anticipated date of hire. An ABD hire will be limited to a one-year appointment, subject to renewal for one year only (2 years maximum).

The candidate must demonstrate an articulate research agenda and the potential for publication, as well as an ability to work effectively and collegially with faculty, staff, and administrators.

Preferred Qualifications: Preference will be given to candidates with teaching experience and/or interest in at least one of the following subject areas: policing, corrections, courts, research methods, and race/ethnic relations.
