    Department Summary

    The only comprehensive accredited journalism program in the Pacific Northwest, the School of Journalism and Communication offers majors in advertising, journalism, media studies, and public relations. The school offers doctorate and master's degrees in Communication and Media Studies at our Eugene campus and professional master's degrees at both our Portland and Eugene campuses: Advertising & Brand Responsibility, Journalism, Multimedia Journalism, and Strategic Communication. We also offer an online master's degree in Immersive Media Communication. As a community of media and communication scholars, journalists, strategic communicators, and content producers, we believe in the importance of diverse representation, inclusion, and anti-oppression as vital components of education and communication. With more than 2,000 undergraduates and 150 graduate students, SOJC is one of six professional schools at UO.     Position Summary

    The Graduate Career & Academic Advisor serves to provide integrated career and academic advising for current and prospective graduate students in the School of Journalism and Communication (SOJC). The Graduate Academic and Career Advisor helps students develop academic plans and goals, identifies barriers to retention and degree completion, leverages available resources, and provides guidance and support as students pursue their academic goals, attain their degrees, and begin their professional journeys. This position is integral to the delivery of program services such as orientation, registration, retention and progression, and career advising. This position will support the unit's leadership in both internal and campus-wide career and academic advising initiatives and recruiting events. This position is the primary, day-to-day point of contact for graduate students, responsible for independently communicating with individuals and groups at all levels of the university to research and interpret information. Administrative and programming duties may include coordinating with faculty directors, alumni, staff, and/or industry partners on academic and career programming and/or facilitating unit-initiated services and programs (e.g. workshops, social media, etc.)

    The Graduate Career & Academic Advisor will provide guidance to students and faculty related to curriculum, application requirements, academic planning and scheduling, and special programs. This position also assists the Director of Graduate Affairs and Student Experience and SOJC faculty with special projects as needed. This position is responsible for communicating with current and prospective students about deadlines, rules, and requirements; managing graduate websites; graduate student recruitment efforts toward enrollment goals; and advising students on program registrations and petitions. This position will also assess student needs for services and identify support resources on campus to provide student support and ensure student success.

    The Graduate Career & Academic Advisor contributes to the unit's integrated student services programming as requested. Student Services coordination duties include developing career resource materials and partnering with industry professionals to provide students with internship and potential job leads as well as professional development opportunities. This position also develops career-related programming in collaboration with faculty, alumni, and campus partners such as the Division of Graduate Studies and the Office of International Students and Scholars. Periodic travel to SOJC's Portland campus will be required.

    The Graduate Career & Academic Advisor must be culturally competent and able to work with all populations of students including first-generation, low-income, historically underrepresented, transfer, LGBTQ, and students of color. This position must be skilled in addressing the needs of re-entry students, students in crisis, and students experiencing scholastic difficulty. The Graduate Academic and Career Advisor must also demonstrate respect for all individuals, welcome diversity among students and colleagues, and actively work toward an inclusive and equitable workplace. Decisions likely to be made in this position include developing procedures in coordination with the Director of Graduate Affairs and Student Experience, appropriately interpreting and applying established policies and procedures, and recommending appropriate actions regarding confidential issues.

    This position reports to the Associate Director of Graduate Affairs (ADGA).

    Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in communication, student services/student affairs, student development, higher education leadership or equivalent education and experience.
  • Six months of experience providing academic or career advising for students from diverse backgrounds in a high school, college, university, or equivalent setting and facilitating student services programming.

  • Ability to work independently with a high degree of initiative and in a team environment.
  • Acute attention to detail, as is required by the nature of this work due to the liability and consequences associated with error.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in communication, student services/student affairs, student development, higher education leadership or equivalent education and experience.
  • Two years of experience providing academic or career advising for students from diverse backgrounds in a high school, college, university, or equivalent setting.
  • Advising experience in an integrated academic and career office in a college/university setting.
  • Advising experience in a professional school/within an academic unit.
  • Experience in utilizing technology for advising purposes (e.g. podcasts, social media platforms, LinkedIn).
  • Experience developing advising or academic programs that are tailored to the needs of student groups (e.g., first-generation, low-income, historically underrepresented, transfer, LGBTQ, and students of color).
