Student Media Advisor

Job Summary
The Student Media Advisor provides oversight in budget management, mentoring, coaching, and instruction to students involved in Florida Gulf Coast University's student media, including print, digital, podcasting, streaming radio and video - Eagle News, ENTV, Eagle Radio.

Job Description

Typical duties may include but are not limited to:
  • Develops a solid infrastructure and innovative business plan to grow and sustain student media with student leaders (and other stakeholders in student media) including the print, student radio (web streaming), and Eagle TV (podcasts).
  • Provides administrative support, guidance and coordination of student media housed within the Dean of Students' office in Campus Life.
  • Acts as liaison between the department, university, and student media advisory board. Provides information to the media advisory board as requested.
  • Creates a learning community that is enriching both to students and staff and integrates academic and professional media skills, values, ethics and responsibilities.
  • Provides yearlong continued and consistent training and development for students working on the newspaper and radio and TV as they produce the student media coverage for the FGCU community.
  • Establishes partnerships and creates career development and internship opportunities for media students.
  • Creates and manages general revenue and auxiliary budgets in accordance with university policies. Presents proposed budgets to Student Government for funding.
  • Develops budget reports for the Dean of Students and media advisory board. Oversees payroll, purchasing, approves expenditures, and related administrative functions of student media. Coordinates with Procurement and General Counsel on contracts for Eagle News, Eagle Radio and Eagle TV.
  • Develops strong relationships with faculty to ensure seamless education and support of students from the classroom to the media environment.
  • Supports the goal of the Division of Student Success and Enrollment Management to create and maintain co-curricular educational and training programs for students in a variety of student media area.
  • Develops and provides coordination and support for student media which demonstrates beliefs in students' capability and potential.
  • Creates strong collaborative relationships with other areas of the campus including students, staff and faculty who are stakeholders of student media.
  • Provides program evaluation, assessment of readership views and reports this out in a mid-year and end of year report to supervisor and Student Media Advisory Board.
  • Provides advice to students on legal, ethical and other matters of journalism.
  • Oversees purchasing and budgeting processes including expenditures and receivables. Receives cash, checks and/or credit card payments in compliance with PCI guidelines. Reconciles P-Card transactions, processes journal vouchers, prepares requisitions and/or purchase orders, and approves payroll. Serves as custodian delegate for all inventory and fiscal affairs of Eagle News in compliance with university and state property guidelines.
  • Assists with classroom presentations and scheduling newspaper assignments as needed.


Other Duties:
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
  • Serves on institutional committees representing the interests of the Campus Life Team.
  • Attends ceremonial functions and professional conferences as needed.


Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization.
  • Five years of full-time experience in media radio, television, digital media, and/or newspaper production.
  • Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.
  • Experience in budget management.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization such as student affairs, journalism, media, writing or closely related field.
  • Two years of appropriate experience in student media production.
  • Experience with policies and budget development.
  • Experience advising student organizations.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Extensive knowledge of journalism, ethics and press law.
  • Knowledge of Federal Communications Commission rules and regulations and internet music licensing protocol.
  • Knowledge of coordinating complex operations, advising student organizations, and policy and budget development.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong leadership, conflict resolution, management and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability at incorporating innovative approaches to meeting challenges in today's changing media landscape.
  • Ability to provide and maintain high journalism standards for student publications.
  • Ability to be self-motivated and efficiently manage multiple projects and tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to with volunteer and advisory boards.
  • Ability to occasionally work nights and weekends.
  • Ability to thrive in an organization that values the diversity of its student body and workforce and actively promotes an equitable environment.


Pay Grade: 15
