Job Description:
The S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University invites applicants to apply for a Professor of Practice position in the Visual Communications (VIS) department to begin Fall 2024. The successful candidate will primarily teach Photo Editing and will focus on mentoring students through short and long form projects that edit and sequence visuals seamlessly for a variety of formats. Expertise as a professional visual editor preferred.

The main responsibility is to teach Photo Editing and project management. The ideal candidate should specialize in Photo Editing and sequencing and Project management: Ability to initiate and develop short and long form projects from an organization and framing perspective.

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate potential for conducting academic scholarship or producing industry-related creative activity that will position the hire as a recognized expert in the field. Participation in service and committee work for the department, the Newhouse School, and Syracuse University is expected.

Qualifications:
  • Previous teaching experience is a plus, but not required.
  • A master’s degree or higher is preferred or equivalent work experience; a bachelor’s degree is required.
  • Candidates must have significant professional experience in the practice of photo-editing, including art direction, sequencing, ethics, usage and copyright issues, and a current knowledge of the visual communications industry.

Job Specific Qualifications:
  • Candidates should demonstrate their ability to instruct others by drawing upon their experience with current industry technologies and equipment utilized by professionals. Being versed in current technological trends as well as being a problem solver and a good team player are essential, as one of the key values and strengths of the school lies in collaboration and interdisciplinary praxis for students and faculty.
  • The successful candidate must demonstrate the potential to engage ambitious undergraduate, graduate and military program students in one of the preeminent visual communications programs in the country. Courses the faculty member would teach range from: basic, intermediate and advanced courses for our undergraduate and graduate programs to basic and advanced courses for our military students; as well as other topics that reflect evolving practices in the industry.


Responsibilities:
Job responsibilities

Primary teaching responsibilities include courses required of all Visual Communications majors on the Photography track focusing on Visual Editing and Project Development as well as other basic, intermediate and advanced courses for our undergraduate, graduate programs and military students; as well as other topics that reflect evolving practices in the industry.The person in this role will also have the opportunity to teach and/or develop elective courses based on their expertise/background. The person in this role will teach six courses per academic year.Professor of Practice professors primary responsibility is with teaching. This position is the perfect opportunity for an experienced photo editor who is interested in teaching the next generation of visual communicators how to tell stories and craft multidisciplinary projects across multiple platforms. A Professor of Practice is expected to stay active in the professional world and may use their summers to continue working in their area of expertise that will continue to position them as a well-known expert in their field. This position has a start date of August 2024.In addition to an academic year teaching load and pursuing a research/creative agenda that brings national visibility to the School, this faculty member will also engage in a variety of service duties, including academic and career advising of undergraduate students, school and university committee service, departmental curriculum development and assessment, and community/industry outreach.
