Advanced Practice Registered Nurse

Job Summary
The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) provides psychiatry services to eligible students, including psychiatric evaluations and follow-up psychiatry appointments, either autonomously or using mutually established protocols in partnership with other licensed medical professionals. Provides consultation, collaboration, and training to Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) clinical staff. Works as an integral member of the interdisciplinary treatment team. Documents patient care in an electronic health record, maintains confidentiality of patients' personal health information, and provides care within the state of Florida scope of practice.

Job Description

Typical duties may include but are not limited to:
  • Performs individual evaluations to assess relevant medical history and student care needs, and makes recommendations for an appropriate and comprehensive care plan.
  • Provides general psychiatric care and counseling for students evaluated to require psychiatric services.
  • Prescribes psychotropic medications and monitors effects; monitors changes in treatment and performs follow-up care of students as needed.
  • Advises student patients of potential benefits and side effects of any prescribed medication. Provides instruction on drug administration and actions to take in the event of side effects. Orders lab tests and follows-up as appropriate.
  • Works with clinical staff to arrange psychiatric or emergency hospitalizations as needed. Arranges for the transfer of student records to and from other service providers.
  • Assists with coordinating treatment for students requiring services beyond those provided on campus. Builds relationships with community hospital psychiatrists and other mental health clinicians to facilitate hospitalizations and appropriate transfers of care.
  • Provides consultation, collaboration, and training with CAPS clinical staff.
  • Works collaboratively and cooperatively with other mental health professionals within Counseling & Psychological Services and primary care physicians in Student Health Services.
  • Prepares comprehensive records on patient evaluations, diagnosis, and treatment plans. Adheres to and complies with HIPAA regulations.
  • Assists with the development of policies and procedures. Suggests ways to provide continuous quality improvement.

Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications:
  • Licensed as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in accordance with Chapter 464, Florida Statutes.
  • Three years of professional, full-time clinical experience related to the position.
  • Experience working in Diagnostic and Statistical (DSM) and/or International Classification of Diseases (ICD) based diagnosis, assessment and treatment.
  • Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.
  • Experience operating a personal computer and proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook).
  • Board certification as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP).
  • Unrestricted Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) license or immediately eligible.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree from an accredited institution in Nursing.
  • Autonomous practice certification.
  • Basic Life Support certification.
  • Two years of experience in a primary health care setting.
  • Three years of experience in a psychiatry setting.
  • Experience with electronic health records.

  • Skill in identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.

  • Ability to work successfully as both a member of a team and independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to operate personal computers with proficiency and learn new applications and systems.
