Reporting to the Director of the Labriola National American Indian Data Center at Arizona State University, the Project Archivist is responsible for coordination and implementation of a grant-funded three-year project (January 2023 - December 2025) to engage in community-based participatory archives development with selected Tribal communities and Native Nations in Arizona. As a representative of ASU, the Project Archivist is responsible for cultivating relationships and liaising with the Native Nations and Tribal communities identified for this project, and collaborating with our ASU School of Law partners to co-develop intellectual and cultural property licenses or memoranda and to collaboratively arrange, describe, and provide access to Indigenous archival materials.  The Project Archivist works with community partners to ensure the appropriate disposition of collections; archival processing; and may prepare materials for reformatting, digitization, preservation, and access.

This position leads best practices toolkit development, leads archives work within the context of the project, and ensures alignment with ASU Library and Labriola Center policies and practices.  The Project Archivist also ensures compliance with all approved Institutional Review Board specifications, guidelines, and requirements. The Project Archivist employs a team-based approach to problem-solving, and ensures timely project completion, statistics tracking, project reporting, and contributes to the overall success of the project.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Leads the implementation of the archival processes associated with the Labriola Center’s grant initiative
  • Collaborates with Tribal partners to gather oral histories and other stories through mutually agreed-upon methods (such as audio or video recording, transcription, photography, and/or writing) to enrich their collections
  • Co-develop collection plans for archival processing, description, and access to archival and cultural heritage materials within ASU’s Mukurtu instance in accordance with the Protocols for Native American Archival Materials and Collective Benefit, Authority to Control, Responsibility, and Ethics (CARE) principles
  • Contributes to development of culturally appropriate protocols and processes throughout the grant period; including the formation of Traditional Knowledge (TK) Labels for Mukurtu
  • Assists in the promotion of the Firekeepers grant initiative, including composing communications, facilitating press inquiries, and promotion via social media channels
  • Collaborates with grant project Indigenous Education Specialist and Language Specialist to develop or enhance culturally appropriate educational support materials, learning modules, and/or culturally appropriate metadata;
  • Collaborates with grant Indigenous Language Specialist to incorporate Traditional Knowledge Labels within community collections
  • Responsible for the supervision and training of Labriola staff who contribute to the grants, including student workers, graduate assistants, and interns
  • Leads development and production of a Firekeepers Toolkit for public use
  • Performs other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • Master’s degree in library and/or information science from an American Library Association accredited program by the hire date. 

Preferred:

  • Degree or certification in Indigenous Studies, American Indian studies, Indigenous Education, or related discipline
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities
  • 1-2 of experience in academic or Tribal libraries or archives
  • Experience using current library and archival descriptive and metadata standards
  • Knowledge of inclusive metadata description practices for American Indian collections
  • Experience with Indigenous archival practices and care, such as the Protocols for Native American Archival Materials
  • Experience using Mukurtu or other Indigenous-informed content management systems
  • Experience with Indigenous-informed data stewardship practices and procedures, such as CARE (Collective Benefit, Authority to Control, Responsibility, Ethics for Indigenous Data Governance) and FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Inter-operable, and Reusable) principles
  • Supervisory experience
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple complex and time-sensitive projects simultaneously
  • Knowledge of Indigenous Peoples of Arizona and/or Southwest

Salary and Rank: This is a Fixed Term, Grant Funded, Academic Professional position; Assistant/Associate Archivist rank and salary dependent upon experience.
