Summary:
The College of Lake County (CLC) is seeking an Instructor, English as a Second Language (ESL) for a diverse student body at our Grayslake, Lakeshore, and Southlake campuses as well as at local business, community, and industry partners. Our ESL department offers courses that support non-native English speakers with developing their reading, writing, listening, and speaking English skills to build success in their personal, academic, and professional lives. Master’s degree in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) - OR - in Linguistics with a specialization in TESOL, - OR - in Adult Education with a specialization in TESOL, - OR - English with a specialization in TESOL.

education field with 5 years of experience teaching ESL to adult education students

Special Instructions Summary: Most classes are taught in person.The priority deadline is March 29, 2024. Additional applications may be considered after the priority deadline. This position may remain open until filled. Applicants who will earn the required degree by May 17, 2024, will be considered.Applicants selected for an interview will be required to submit a minimum of two (2) letters of recommendation.This is a full-time, tenure-track faculty position. Salary placement is commensurate with education and experience. An optional contract for the summer session offers the potential for significantly greater earnings.The minimum 2024 - 2025 academic year (fall and spring semester) base salary range was $69,117 with a master’s degree to $83,790 with a doctorate in the subject field.Faculty may be assigned to any of the three campuses; Grayslake, Lakeshore or Southlake. New faculty hires are required to attend orientation the week (August 5-9) before the start date of August 12, 2024.Foreign Transcripts: Transcripts issued outside the United States require a course-by-course analysis with an equivalency statement from a certified transcript evaluation service verifying the degree equivalency to that of an accredited institution within the USA.Please note: Foreign transcripts require a course-by-course degree analysis with an equivalency statement from a certified transcript evaluation service. Total Hours Per Week: Fifteen (15) load hours and ten (10) office hours.

Work Schedule:
Locations may vary based on program needs to include locations such as Grayslake, Lakeshore Campus, Southlake Campus, and off-campus sites throughout the community. Classes may be offered in the morning, afternoon, or evening. All classes are in-person.

Summary of Essential Functions:
  1. Selects, prepares, maintains, and updates current curriculum, course outlines and printed and non-printed instructional materials.
  2. Provides students and the academic division a syllabus that clearly states course objectives and learning outcomes, attendance policies in line with those of the College, texts and readings, timelines and evaluation criteria, and any other information required by College, academic division, or department.
  3. Meets all classes at assigned times. If unable to meet an assigned class, reports absence to supervisor and academic division staff in an appropriate manner.
  4. Teaches assigned courses in subject field each academic semester to meet the needs of students, the department and the community. Delivers course content using a variety of teaching styles at various times and campus locations.
  5. Provides instructional support to the students. Assists in student advisement and refers students, when appropriate, to sources of specialized services within the College. Is available for student consultation through phone, email or appropriately established office hours (in-person or online).
  6. Participates in developing and administering department and college-wide assessment of student learning. Uses departmental testing instruments as provided and administers other instruments designed to measure student learning outcomes as requested and required by the department, academic division or College. Provides all results as requested.
  7. Evaluates student performance in meeting course objectives and learning outcomes through assignments, projects, discussions, or examinations. Provides feedback to students in a timely manner on student performance.
  8. Maintains accurate grade records as required by the College. Submits all attendance and grade records electronically prior to the required deadlines. Produces appropriate grade records for supervisor upon request.
  9. Uses the appropriate College policies and procedures to resolve and document student complaints, concerns and problems.
  10. Encourages students to submit course evaluations, reviews course evaluations when available and uses feedback to improve course delivery.
  11. Participates, when appropriate, in the formation and meetings of career program advisory committees, governance groups, College, academic division, and department committees.
  12. Attends faculty meetings, department meetings and all other meetings called by authorized personnel.
  13. Attends Opening Week activities and Commencement.
  14. Is ethical in all conduct and maintains a high level of professionalism.
  15. Consistently completes all mandated compliance trainings.
  16. Properly and effectively utilizes appropriate technology such as Navigate, Canvas, and Zoom to deliver instructional materials, maintain grades, and provide timely communications with students, etc.
  17. Maintains current knowledge of subject matter via professional development such as professional organization membership, attendance of seminars, conferences and classes, and professional publications.
  18. Follows all institutional and regulatory policies, procedures and standards. Utilizes self-assessment to determine progress in meeting performance objectives and career goals.
  19. Actively supports the College and academic division through ongoing service and engagement.
  20. Performs other duties as assigned by the Dean or Associate Dean.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: College: Knowledge of College policies, procedures, and practices including the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA); ability to apply sound reasoning to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, and diagram form; ability to work effectively and constructively with individuals and teams from diverse cultures, language groups, and abilities; demonstrate sensitivity to and ability to work with the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Department/Divisional: Knowledge of Instructional policies, procedures, and practices with the ability to answer work-related questions; and/or interpret and apply these guidelines correctly in various situations; ability to solve issues and work with diverse populations; ability to read and interpret instructional documents.

DECISION-MAKING and ANALYTICAL SKILLS: ability to interpret policy and establish methods and procedures for ability to perform all essential functions using safe work methods and following safety regulations relating to job; ability to organize and express ideas, directions, and data in a logical sequence to describe a process or explain procedures such as how to perform a task to someone else.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS: Well-developed public speaking and presentation skills to effectively present materials to individual students or groups; well-developed written communication skills; ability to communicate effectively in a tactful and courteous manner with a variety of people, including students, employees, faculty, and the general public; ability to communicate effectively verbally and written to work with a diverse workforce and student population to prioritize and delegate projects, exchange ideas, information and opinions effectively with others to formulate policies and programs and/or arrive at decisions, conclusions or solutions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, other departments, students, and the public; ability to manage interpersonal conflict situations requiring tact, diplomacy and discretion.

PHYSICAL: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a classroom setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, reach; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; and to verbally communicate to exchange information with or without reasonable accommodation.
